This Story Starts at TCAPS Neal Endicott playing tenor saxophone

Lecturer in Music Theory and Composition, East Tennessee State University
Traverse City Central High School, Class of 2009

Neal Endicott, a proud 2009 graduate of Traverse City Central High School, found his lifelong passion for music within the vibrant programs of TCAPS. From Band and Jazz Band to Chorale and Orchestra at East Middle School and beyond, these early experiences were foundational.

Building on this strong start, Neal earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from Western Michigan University (2013, 2015), along with an MBA in 2015. He continued his musical journey, achieving a Master of Music (2020) and a Doctor of Musical Arts (2020) from Michigan State University.

Since 2020, Neal has served as a Lecturer in Music Theory and Composition at East Tennessee State University. A dedicated composer, he frequently collaborates with performers, with recent projects including a new tenor saxophone concerto and a song cycle inspired by his great uncle's poetry. He also maintains an active career as a jazz saxophonist.

Neal considers performances of his compositions by the Michigan State University Orchestra and the United States Coast Guard Band among his proudest accomplishments, with an upcoming premiere by the Michigan Philharmonic. He also finds fulfillment in mentoring his students' musical growth.

Reflecting on his TCAPS education, Neal credits Peter Deneen, his band director at East Middle School, for providing crucial creative outlets and a strong sense of belonging, directly influencing his career path. He valued the numerous musical opportunities at TCAPS that complemented his academic pursuits.

Neal's advice for students: “Be curious! Try new things — especially creative ones — and try to learn everything you can about the things you do. You never know where that curiosity might lead you."
