Episode 12: Live from the Opera House, It's Storytime! Balloons Over BroadwayA parade is a public procession, usually celebrating a special day or event. Each fall in New York City, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade wows thousands of onlookers who wait for hours, lining the streets to catch a glimpse of the giant balloons as they make their way down the city streets. In many ways, it is like a theater performance, just outside, moving through the streets. Parades are full of music and performances, puppetry, singing, dancing, and floats. And, behind it all is a creative mind that helps to build and plan the entire event, an artistic director like today’s guest reader, or in the case of today’s book, a puppeteer with the vision to create giant balloon creatures that today make up the foundation of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade event! Before young Tony, the hero of today’s book, grows up to become an accomplished puppeteer, he was busy solving problems, like chores, using his imagination and some science. For today’s activity, we are going to take a page out of the book and try our hand at making some do-it-yourself pulley’s, just like Tony. Then we will challenge you to see what household problem you can solve using pulleys.
