School Closings & Alerts

Viewing School Closings & Alerts Information

While remote learning provides new opportunities to continue education from home, given that some students and teachers in our community must travel to access reliable internet service, for the 2020-2021 school year, TCAPS will continue to call snow days. In the event of an inclement weather day, staff in cooperation with the GT Road commission, work to determine if roads are safe enough for transportation and travel to schools.

On the day of a school closing or when an important message needs to be shared, an Alert screen will appear every time the district and/or all school home pages are opened. (This is an embedded feature of the website and is not affected by pop up blockers.) Archived alert messages can be found on this webpage.

To subscribe to the School Closings & Alerts RSS feed, click on the orange RSS feed icon found at the end of the School Closings & Alerts title below to obtain the url to add to your RSS feed reader.  Note: announcements will only be made when school is closed. There will be no "open" announcements.

And new this year, TCAPS will also send text alerts to staff and families provided that they have opted in to receive text alerts from the district. This will allow the district and schools to share important and timely information with staff and families via text messaging, including snow day alerts. On November 6, 2020, the district sent an initial text message inviting all families to opt in to receive texts from both the district and their child’s school. All text messages will come from the same number (87569). If you did not receive the opt-in text message, you can always opt in at any time by sending the word YES to 87569 and make sure your phone number is on file with the school. Texting is limited to contact numbers tied to the district’s staff and student databases, therefore is not available to the general public.

School closing information will continue to be shared via our normal methods: all local media stations, the district Facebook/Twitter feeds, and the bus hotline (231.933.1955). School closings are announced as early in the morning as possible, but can occur as late as 6:00 a.m.

It is important to remember that the final decision regarding the attendance of your student on an inclement weather day is a personal decision parents must make for their family. It should be noted that the safest form of pupil transportation to and from school is the school bus.

Inclement Weather Early Release Days - June 10-11, 2021

Due to the high temperatures and humidity our region has experienced over the last several days, classrooms have become increasingly warm and uncomfortable, especially in the afternoon hours, creating a challenging learning environment for both students and staff. Attempts to move classes to cooler parts of the building or to outdoor shaded areas have been made. However, conducting lessons in alternate settings and maintaining COVID-19 protocols has its own challenges and isn’t always conducive to productive learning.

It is anticipated that the heat index will continue to be high for the remainder of the week before eventually cooling off next week. Due to the inclement weather, we are calling for early release days for all TCAPS schools Thursday and Friday of this week. This will allow daily in-person instruction to continue during the cooler part of the day while taking into consideration the well-being of staff and students.

All schools, including students in the UpNorth Virtual Live program, will follow the Early Release Schedule for both Thursday, June 10th and Friday, June 11th (View early release dismissal times and bus stop drop off times here.). Please note: afternoon extended day is not available on early release days. This change in schedule will not impact the district’s last three days of school next week, including the last day of school (half day) on Wednesday, June 16th. Cooler temperatures are expected in our region for our last three days of school.
