High Schools Host Student Voter Registration Events at TCAPS

Traverse City Central High School (CHS) student groups and Traverse City West Senior High (WSH) Student Senate will host voter registration and information sessions at their respective schools this month. The purpose of the event is to provide information on eligibility and encourage eligible students to register.

“We know it is important for students who will be 18 years of age to understand the voting process, including how to register and where to learn about what will be on the ballot in upcoming elections,” said Joe Esper, principal at WSH. “This opportunity also provides a space for students who aren’t yet of voting age to learn about their future rights and responsibilities as citizens moving into adulthood.”

Traverse City West Senior High School will host their session on Monday, May 13, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Traverse City Central High School will hold sessions before school, during lunches, and after school on Monday, May 20. Traverse City High School held a similar event this past fall.

“Providing an opportunity to learn about the voting process helps prepare students for a future beyond high school,” said Dr. John VanWagoner, Superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. “This experience can initiate a student's interest in voting that will hopefully stay with them throughout adulthood. “
