TCAPS Announces Four National Merit Semifinalists
Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is pleased to announce four students as Semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors reach this level of academic achievement.
Traverse City Central High School students Alden King, Lucy Poppleton and Jackson Price, and West Senior High School student Gianna Primo, were among 16,000 students named as 2024 National Merit Semifinalists. As semifinalists, students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million.
“Being recognized as a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist is a very high honor and we are incredibly proud of this level of academic achievement,” said Dr. John R. VanWagoner II, Superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. “We also acknowledge all TCAPS Pre K-12 staff for their ongoing dedication to every student's success and academic journey.”
About 1.3 million juniors entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 PSAT/NMSQT, which serves as the initial screen of program entrants. Semifinalists who qualify as Finalists will be notified in February 2024.
