It's High 5 Friday! 🙌🖐
This week, high fives go out to:
1. Many of our TCAPS elementary students who laced up their sneakers, hopped on their bikes and scooters, and rolled into school with huge smiles for National Walk and Roll to School Day! It was a fantastic morning promoting healthy habits, active transportation, and safe routes to school across our community. A big thank you to all the families, staff, and volunteers who joined in the fun and helped make the commute extra special! 🚶♂️🛴☀️
2. Students in Mrs. Steele and Mrs. Stallworth’s science classes who took their learning outdoors! Our West Middle Schoolers explored the campus to see firsthand how human development affects the water cycle. Learning science where it happens makes lessons much more meaningful and memorable! 🌊🔍✨
3. A huge thank you to the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department and Long Lake Fire Department for visiting our elementary schools and teaching our students all about fire safety! Our students learned essential safety tips, saw firefighter gear up close, and gained valuable knowledge on how to stay safe at home and in the community. We are so grateful for our local first responders and their dedication to keeping our TCAPS students safe and informed! ✨🚒
4. Our TIE 10 students at Central High School who had an incredible opportunity to explore the sun, moon, and planets through high-powered telescopes, observing real solar flares, sunspots, Mars, Jupiter, and the detailed surface of the moon! Even better, one of the presenters connected the stargazing experience directly to locations Mark Watney describes in The Martian, bringing classroom literature to life through hands-on science. A huge thank you to the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society for providing such a fantastic, inspiring enrichment experience for our Trojans! 🌌☀️
5. Blair Elementary students who were celebrated as the first Bobcat T.H.I.N.K. Ambassadors of the school year! We are so proud of these outstanding young leaders for serving as positive role models and showing what it truly means to T.H.I.N.K. (True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind) every single day. Keep up the great work and shining bright! 🤝✨

SRP Action Spotlight: SECURE 🔒
Directive: "Get inside. Lock the outside doors."
When there is a potential hazard outside the school, such as nearby police activity, we use SECURE. All exterior doors are locked, everyone stays inside, and normal activities continue inside the building.

TCAPS Update: Upcoming Natural Gas Pipeline Work Will Produce Visible Flare and “Rotten Egg” Odor 📢
DTE Energy is making natural gas pipeline upgrades in Traverse City to keep the community’s service safe and reliable. As part of this work, crews are scheduled to conduct a controlled gas flare on Tuesday, Oct. 6, beginning around 8:30 a.m. and lasting until approximately 3 p.m.
During this routine process, odorant will be injected into the new gas main near Eighth St. and Hastings St. Crews will then conduct a controlled flare operation in the northwest corner of the TC Central High School parking lot, near Eastern Ave. and Milliken St. The flare may be visible to nearby residents and businesses and may be accompanied by a slight “rotten egg” odor and low roaring sound. This is a routine procedure, and natural gas service will not be interrupted. Traffic control will be in place near the two main work areas, but no road closures or detours are expected.
The odorant will remain in the pipe for about one week, with crews expected to purge the remaining gas/odorant from the line on or around Tuesday, Oct. 13, using a second, shorter flare operation.

1. Mrs. Walston at Central Grade Elementary who recently attended a Detroit Lions game and stopped by the Fan Club Tent. When the Lions staff asked if she had any "little ones" who might like a Detroit Lions T-shirt, she answered 28! Students were absolutely thrilled to open the box and discover shirts, sunglasses, fidget spinners, and so much more. Huge thank you to the Detroit Lions for giving these 3rd graders a surprise they'll never forget. What a touchdown of a day for Mrs. Walston’s 3rd Grade class! 🦁💙🏈
2. A big congratulations and thank you to Central High’s athletic trainer, Amy Ream, as she begins her 37th year taking care of our Trojans! For nearly four decades, Amy has dedicated herself to keeping our student-athletes healthy, safe, and ready to compete, supporting everyone with an extraordinarily big heart. She is a huge asset to our students, staff, and entire school community. Thank you, Amy, for 37 years of care, commitment, and Trojan Pride! 🏆❤️
3. A big thank you to Chef Adam from Cook It Forward, a local nonprofit organization, for the beautiful plating at Courtade Elementary’s first taste test of the year! Chef Adam took fresh radishes harvested straight from Courtade's school garden, pickled them, and created a wonderful plate for students to try. Way to expand those palates, Courtade!👨🍳✨
4. Traverse City High School students who spent time giving back at Reigning Liberty Ranch! Reigning Liberty has been a dedicated, long-time supporter of TCHS, and our students always look forward to returning the favor. It was a wonderful day of teamwork, hands-on work, and strengthening community connections. Thank you to Reigning Liberty for your continued partnership and for providing our students with such meaningful opportunities! 🐴✨
5. Kindergarten and 2nd grade buddies from Mrs. LaBarre's and Ms. Freeman's classes at Eastern Elementary who teamed up for a special community service project! Together, the buddy partners decorated bags for Project Feed the Kids, which will be used to pack donated food for local families in need across our community. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to collaborate, build friendships, and learn the power of giving back! 🤝✨

1. Congratulations to our Central High School and West Senior High School National Merit Scholars! Trojans Sylvia Coulter, Francesca Harbold, Claire Poppleton, Ulysses Walls, and Titan Marella Mast were named Semifinalists in the 72nd National Merit Scholarship Program! We also honor Commended Scholars: Trojans Oscar Falcon, Charlie Hammersley, Harrison Jeffries, Avery Johnston, Nathan Stawski, Marian White, and Titan Nolan Bildeaux. Their academic excellence represents the very best of TCAPS! 📚✨
2. Westwoods Elementary’s first Wakeup fundraiser was a smash success! Second graders raised over $400 for their field trip fund. A huge thank you to local sponsor Mundos Coffee Shop for providing pastries and coffee to fuel the morning. We love seeing our community come together to support Westwoods! ☕️🥐
3. Celebrating Central High's Eric Schugars on his recent recognition as the Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Week! Eric and his father, Jack Schugars (2003 winner), are only the second father-son duo in Michigan history to earn this honor. Thank you, Coach Schugars, for your continued leadership on and off the field! 🏈🦁
4. Traverse City High School kicked off Maverick Enrichment Days with charter fishing! Students explored the fishing profession, studied marine environments, perfected their skills, and brought fresh fillets home. Thank you to True Blue Charters, LLC for an unforgettable experience! 🌊🐟
5. The West Senior High School student exchange program is officially underway! Visiting students have jumped right into exploring Traverse City, connecting with our community, and building lifelong friendships. We’re thrilled for everything this exchange journey has in store for our Titans and host families! 🌍✈️
