1. Mr. Derr’s Honors Physics students at Central High School who took physics beyond the classroom! They visited NMC’s Marine Technology program at Discovery Pier to see real-world physics in action on the water. Thank you to NMC Marine Technology for hosting a great experience! ⚓🔬

2. Congratulations to the Cherry Knoll Girls Cross Country Team for earning 2nd place All-City, and Long Lake Elementary Panthers for representing their school with amazing grit and sportsmanship at the All-City Meet! We are so proud of all our young athletes for a fantastic season! 🏆💙

3. West Senior High’s Model United Nations team! Their delegates kicked off the season with an exciting mock conference at Cherry MUN. Thank you to returning members who mentored new delegates in diplomacy and committee procedures. 🏛️💡

4. Our Courtade Elementary students made unforgettable memories while enjoying a fun-filled day at Pirate's Cove. Students had a perfect autumn day for a field trip adventure! A huge thank you to Pirate’s Cove, the Courtade Elementary School PTO, and parent volunteers for your support in making this special trip possible for the students! ⛳☀️

5. Traverse City High School students who wrapped up the week with some awesome hands-on community learning! One group stepped into the world of healthcare with medical simulations, while another explored sound history at the Music House Museum. A huge thank you to Kalkaska Munson Hospital and the Music House Museum for hosting and creating such memorable career and cultural experiences!🩺🎶✨

This week in our Standard Response Protocol (SRP) series, we are reviewing the Evacuate action.

Directive: "To a location."

When it is safer outside than inside, such as during a fire alarm, an Evacuate action is ordered. Students and staff move in an orderly manner to a designated safe area.

This Friday, Oct 23, join us at Thirlby Field as the Trojans and Titans come together to honor Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders! Gates open at 5:30 PM, ceremonies start at 6:35 PM, and kickoff is at 7:10 PM.

Honoring Our Local Veterans: Class of 2027

Traverse City Area Public Schools is proud to invite local veterans from WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Era to receive their high school diploma and walk in our 2027 graduation ceremonies! 🎓

Under Michigan law, TCAPS awards honorary diplomas to veterans whose military service interrupted their education. Family members are also welcome to apply on behalf of a living or deceased veteran.

This week, high fives go out to:

1. West Senior High students who put safety first as they reviewed essential school safety protocols with Deputy Core and Director of Safety and Security Patrick McManus.The interactive session covered key emergency procedures and daily campus awareness, ensuring our Titans feel prepared, vigilant, and confident every day. A big thank you to Deputy Core and Director McManus for leading this important effort and keeping WSH campus safe! 💙🤝

2. Mrs. Lautner's first graders who just wrapped up their language arts study of the human body, had learning come alive as students stepped into the shoes of healthcare professionals. From exploring how our bodies work to interactive activities, these young learners got a memorable glimpse into the medical field. Future doctors and healthcare heroes in the making at Courtade Elementary! 🩺✨

3. East Middle School’s Robotics students who got an exciting look at the future of manufacturing. Students recently toured Skilled Manufacturing Inc. and BORIDE Engineered Abrasives to see firsthand how the robotics and engineering concepts they learn in the classroom translate directly into real-world careers. A special shout-out to Michigan Works! for joining the trip and for their continued partnership in connecting our students with career exploration and future pathway opportunities! 💼✨

4. A huge thank you to the local Girl Scouts for donating a wonderful Buddy Bench to Traverse Heights Elementary! This thoughtful gift will help foster friendship, inclusion, and kindness for years to come. 👏

5. Eastern Elementary's 1st-grade mathematicians who were hard at work this week! Our young learners were busy building strong math foundations, solving problems, and showing off their critical thinking skills. It’s inspiring to watch their confidence and curiosity grow with every lesson.💡👏

The community is invited to join TCAPS for a Central High School Construction Information Session regarding upcoming facility projects! Join us on Wednesday, October 28, at 6:30 PM in the Central High School Cafeteria to learn about plans for a new competition gym, dedicated wrestling room, main office secure vestibule, and improved facility circulation directly from TCAPS administration, architects, and contractors. Community members will have the opportunity to ask questions.

This week’s SRP overview focuses on Lockdown.

Directive: "Locks, lights, out of sight."
Lockdown is called if there is an immediate threat inside the building. Doors are locked, lights are turned off, and everyone moves out of sight and remains quiet.

TCAPS Update: Scheduled DTE Pipeline Work on Tuesday, Oct. 13 📢

As part of ongoing natural gas pipeline upgrades in Traverse City to keep the community’s service safe and reliable, DTE Energy crews are scheduled to purge remaining gas and odorant from the line on or around Tuesday, Oct. 13.

This work will involve a second, shorter controlled flare operation in the northwest corner of the TC Central High School parking lot (near Eastern Ave. and Milliken St.). The flare may be visible to nearby residents and businesses and may be accompanied by a slight “rotten egg” odor and low roaring sound. This is a routine procedure, and natural gas service will not be interrupted. Traffic control will be in place near the work area, but no road closures or detours are expected.

If you have general or non-emergency questions about the work, call 616.632.2620, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As always, if you believe you detect a natural gas leak at your property, leave the area immediately, call 911, then call DTE’s dedicated natural gas leak hotline at 800.947.5000.
