The Occidentalist Newspaper Staff along with some members of our Global Studies Academic Community were fortunate enough to hear from guest speaker Lisa Tarchak, an editor from the New York Times, during 1st hour today. Lisa shared with students the importance of ethical journalism, her story of how she began working with the New York Times 27 years ago, and answered questions from student journalists.

The Sibley Prairie is a little-known ecosystem in Wayne county, Detroit. What most people don’t know, however, is that this Prairie is the largest and healthiest left in Michigan. Not only that, but it’s a lakeplain wet prairie, a globally rare ecosystem. Recently, it has been put up for sale for private development, which would destroy the entire ecosystem. The Michigan Land Conservancy has a chance to buy it, but they need to raise $6 million by the end of 2026.
To help in these efforts, a group of Traverse City highschoolers banded together and held an art fair to raise money for the Michigan Land Conservancy. Selling art prints, stickers, hand-thrown ceramics, and much more, these teens raised almost $3,000 on December 6th, the day of their in-person sale. They, however, are not done yet. All unsold art is currently on an Etsy site for a discount, and all proceeds are still going towards this cause. Though ambitious, they are hoping to raise $5,000 in total to donate to the protection of Sibley Prairie.
Their Etsy shop is linked below, along with their fundraiser page.

Photography I students in Mrs. Clone's class participated in a school-wide art installation inspired by global street artist, JR's, Inside Out project. He is known for his large-scale black and white portraits on paper that are pasted in public spaces. His work often challenges widely held preconceptions and explores themes like identity and social participation. The entire lower wings, LMC windows, Commons balcony and staircase at West are adorned with 4' tall portraits of students and staff members showing off their smiles and unique personalities. The project hopes to incite smiles and spread small moments of joy while also teaching students the power of art to influence others.
