During tonight’s public Board Study Session, the Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) Board of Education appointed Matthew Schmidt to fill the interim board seat following the resignation of Scott Newman-Bale on July 30.

“Filling this vacancy was a thoughtful process, made challenging by a group of applicants with inspiring backgrounds and great qualifications,” said Board President Erica Moon Mohr. “The Board's unanimous vote for Matthew Schmidt demonstrates a unified focus and shared commitment to advancing the district’s core mission to educate, engage, and support all learners to maximize individual excellence and success.”

The term for this appointment begins tonight, August 24, 2026, and runs through December 31, 2028.
