Today, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) launches Safe Schools Week 2026, a national observance focused on raising awareness around school safety, emergency readiness, and student well-being. Throughout the week, TCAPS is highlighting the proactive steps, daily habits, and community partnerships that keep district learning environments secure.

Key Focus Areas for the Week:

  • Transportation & Road Safety: Bus light regulations (yellow means prepare to stop; red means stop in both directions) and caution during peak pick-up and drop-off times.

  • Facility Security & Drills: Standardized emergency frameworks and routine practice of fire, high wind, and lockdown drills across all district buildings.

  • Cybersecurity Awareness: Guidance on protecting personal information and practicing safe habits online.

  • Mental Health & Support: Supporting student well-being through healthy outdoor routines, open communication, and the confidential, 24/7 OK2SAY tip line.

  • Free Community Resource: Free gun locks provided by the Michigan State Police, available at the TCAPS Administration Building (2075 Cass Road, Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

"A safe learning environment relies on strong, active partnerships between our schools, staff, families, and community," said Superintendent Dr. John R. VanWagoner II. "Safe Schools Week provides a dedicated time to reinforce the daily safety habits, protocols, and open communication that keep our school community secure and supported year-round."
