Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) hosted Michigan State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko on Friday, September 25, for a hands-on tour highlighting district programs, staff dedication, and student leadership across Traverse City.
Dr. Maleyko’s visit kicked off at the TCAPS transportation facility, where he met with district mechanics and experienced firsthand what it takes to operate a school bus. Under the guidance of a TCAPS driver trainer, Dr. Maleyko drove a school bus for the very first time, navigating the parking lot and successfully backing into a parking spot.
The visit continued at Traverse Heights Elementary, where student House Leaders welcomed the State Superintendent and led him on a tour designed to mirror the experience of a new student. Throughout the walkthrough, students emphasized the school’s focus on building a strong sense of belonging. As part of the visit, Dr. Maleyko spun the school's House Wheel and was officially sorted into House Erie. He also spent time speaking with members of the library and lunchroom staff, as well as several educators across the building.
Next, the group headed to Central High School’s Innovation and Manufacturing Center. There, Dr. Maleyko toured the Ride Lab and watched students design and build custom skateboards. The hands-on project allows students to apply real-world engineering, math, and manufacturing skills directly to their creations.
Reflecting on the visit, Dr. Maleyko shared high praise for TCAPS Superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner, his administrative team, and the staff and students across each facility visited.
TCAPS Superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner expressed appreciation for the State Superintendent’s visit and his direct engagement with students and support personnel.
"We were honored to welcome Dr. Maleyko to TCAPS and share the incredible work happening across our district every day," said Dr. VanWagoner. "From our hardworking transportation staff to our inspiring student leaders at Traverse Heights Elementary and the hands-on innovation in Central High School's Innovation and Manufacturing Center, this visit was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the dedication of our staff and the amazing talents of our students."
