Student-Led Conferences to be Held May 2
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions regarding student-led conferencing:

1. What is a student-led conference?
A student-led conference is a student-driven conversation between the student and guardians reviewing his/her growth over the course of the year. Students will use an electronic portfolio to guide the conversation.

2. Why are students participating in student-led conferencing?
Student-led conferencing gives students the opportunity to showcase their work, growth and achievement as well as develop and enhance communication skills. This will also prepare students for college or career interviews. Parents/guardians will have the opportunity to discuss student achievements in a structured conversation.

3. When will we be having student-led conferences?
Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at West Senior High School from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

4. How long does a student-led conference last?
A student-led conference typically lasts 15-20 minutes.

5. How do we schedule conferencing?
A letter will be sent home. Parents will be able to choose an hour time slot (4:30-5:30, 5:30-6:30 or 6:30-7:30) and will be scheduled for a 20-minute time slot within that hour.

6. What if a student or parent will not attend?
All students must participate, as this is now a graduation requirement. If a parent is unable to attend, then the student may select another adult to attend the conference.

7. What about sports/concerts/performances/etc...?
Our administrative team worked with the athletic and music departments to ensure that there will not be conflicts on this evening.

Sick Students at West Senior High
If your child calls home asking to be picked up because they are ill, please ask them to go to their neighborhood office or the nurse's office.  Students are using their cell phones to call home and not checking into an office.  This is a concern because if they are ill enough to need to go home, someone at school should be aware of the situation and keep an eye on them until they are able to be picked up.  This is for their safety.  Thank you.

Fitness Testing
Students in all Physical Education classes participate in fitness testing. The results of these tests are mailed home with report cards. Please contact your student’s physical education teacher if you would like more information on the tests or visit http://www.fitnessgram.net/home/.

Fitnessgram is a fitness assessment and reporting program for youth. The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that are used to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate. Students are assessed using the Healthy Fitness Zone standards.

Using the Healthy Fitness Zone standards helps to minimize comparisons between children and emphasize personal fitness for health rather than goals based solely on performance. Since only modest amounts of exercise are needed for obtaining health benefits, most students who participate in physical activity almost every day will be able to achieve a score that will place them in the Healthy Fitness Zone.

Class of 2003 Yearbooks
Nine class of 2003 yearbooks were found in a school storeroom. If you are the parent of a 2003 graduate, please let us know if you'd like one of these yearbooks. Thank you.

Heart Rate Monitor Agreement
TCAPS students enrolled in Physical Education at West Senior High will be using Polar Hear Rate Monitors to record their activity level during class. Students will be issued their own monitor strap for daily use and will be responsible for returning it at the end of the trimester. In addition, they will be assigned a transmitter and watch and will be responsible for using the heart rate monitor properly and for returning it after each class period.

We are very pleased to provide your child with the opportunity to utilize this technology. It will empower them to learn the value of working within their target heart rate, adjust the intensity of their workout, and evaluate the progress of their cardiovascular health.

Message from the West Senior High PE Staff
Due to security problems last year in the all the locker-rooms, before, during, and after school, we are asking all students to leave all their valuable belongings (Phones, Ipods, Netbooks, money, wallets) locked in their own academic wing lockers.

They are not to bring them into the locker rooms. Only on the days that a Netbook would be required in a class will they be allowed to bring them.

Yearbooks at West Senior High
Yearbooks are on sale for $65. Our final orders are due December 1st. Books can also be ordered from our website with credit card or students can bring a check to Mrs. Hansen in A108. We sell out every year, so it is important to order early.

Senior Photos
Senior photos are due October 25th. Our senior photo specifications can be found at our school's website under the "School Information" tab and then under “Yearbook”.

Robotics
It is time for students and parents to sign up for WSH second year of FIRST Robotics.  We are looking for any student grades 9-12 to join our Robotics Team.  Our class meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:10 PM until 5:00 PM.  Some students are busy after school with sports or music activities, which is why we offer this program all three trimesters.

Robotics is a competitive team dedicated to solving real world problems in a large group environment taking advantage of the resources we have available in our community.  We are looking for students that have or wish to gain experience in the following areas:  mechanical skills, electronics, construction, computer aided design, problem solving, communication, project management, leadership, organization, fundraising, marketing, team building, web design, writing, accounting, sales, engineering, and more.  While robotics meets after the normal school day, students will receive high school credit for taking this class.

FIRST Robotics:  Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
To learn more about FIRST Robotics visit the website:
www.usfirst.org

We need parents to assist us with our mission by playing the role of student mentor.  The time commitment may vary depending on your availability and our competition calendar.  While FIRST Robotics is a class, it is also a competitive team with some large goals to compete and win at the local, state, and national level.  Building a successful team requires the recruitment of talented members of our community.  Most of us lack the experience to build robots, but all of us will be inspired by our young people to offer suggestions and a unique set of knowledge and experiences to make our team better.

Students: See your counselor to sign up or visit Mr. Wilson in A204 after school.
Parents: contact Mike Wilson at 632-9896.

2nd Annual Netherlands School Exchange Program
Spend nearly two weeks in Holland over spring break. Learn real Dutch culture by staying at the home of a Dutch family for most of those two weeks. Host a Dutch student at your house in October for one week. Learn how the Dutch educational system works by attending school for several days at a Dutch school. Take the Dutch student you host to classes with you for several days to teach them how the American educational system works. Tour Amsterdam and The Hague. Show your Dutch student Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinac Island.

This Traverse City West – Doetinchem Ulenhof College student exchange is the chance of a lifetime to truly experience another culture. This is so much more than a normal European field trip. Most visitors to Holland have the opportunity to explore castles in the Dutch country-side, visit the Anne Frank house, and tour the canals of Amsterdam. While we will do all of those things, we will also be able to experience things that very few visitors to Holland are able to experience. You would be one of the lucky few to have the opportunity to truly experience the culture of this beautiful country by living with a Dutch family and going to school with the same Dutch student who you hosted in Traverse City.

Show a Dutch student the best aspects of American culture and experience Dutch culture first hand by signing up for the 2nd annual TC West-Doetinchem exchange program. Contact Mr. Mike Durbin at 933-7725 or durbinmi@tcaps.net for more information.

Parent/Teacher Conference Scheduled!

I.D. Photos and School Pictures
I.D. photos and school pictures were taken on registration days. The first I.D. cards are provided at no cost to the student. All students will be required to carry their I.D. card at school and have it available at all school functions. It is also necessary to have an I.D. card to check out LMC materials and when purchasing lunches in the cafeteria. Lost I.D. cards can be replaced for a cost of $3.00.

Your Cooperation Please…
Because of the number of students that attend West Sr. High, the limited personal space the students have and the desire to limit classroom disruptions, we discourage deliveries of flowers or other kinds of arrangements (balloons, candy) for students. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Lunch Account
You can now deposit money into your student's lunch account online.  You can also view your student's purchases and balance.  Just go to sendmoneytoschool.com.  You will need your student’s ID number to access information.  The first time you visit this site you will need to register.  After that you can view their purchases and balance free of charge but there is a fee of $2.00 per transaction to make deposits.

Free or Reduced Lunches
A new application needs to be submitted at the start of every new school year, even if a family was on the food program last year.  The only exception to this is if you receive a letter from food service that says you have already been approved for the 2011/2012 school year.  Please read letters from food service carefully and follow instructions.  Applications will be available in the main office and in the cafeteria. You can also apply online at lunchapp.com.

Only one application needs to be filled out by each family.  Be sure to list ALL students and the schools they are attending in part 3. List everyone living in the household along with their incomes in part 4. Please be sure to fill out the application completely, including your social security number, telephone number and your signature.

Who can get free or reduced meals?  Anyone who is within the income limits on the chart inside the application or in households getting Food Stamps, FIP, FDPIR and most foster children.  Homeless, migrant or runaway students may also be eligible.  Call the school for a homeless liaison or migrant coordinator to see if your children qualify if you have not received a letter informing you that they will be getting free meals.

Please go to
lunchapp.com or fill out the application and return it to the cafeteria at registration or during the first or second week of school. It can take 10 to 14 business days to be processed. To avoid interruptions in your students free or reduced meals, this form needs to be sent in as soon as possible. Students that were receiving free or reduced meals last year will still be able to get their meals until the 30th of September. However, if a new application has not been processed by September 30th, the student will be dropped from the program and become full pay on October 1st.

The cost for a reduced price meal is $.30 for breakfast and $.40 for lunch. Students can eat breakfast and lunch everyday.  If you have any questions, please call the Food Service Office at 933-1910 or Trish Hackett in the cafeteria at West Senior High at 933-7552.

Concerning Attendance…
PLEASE give our neighborhood offices advance notice when you need to pick up your student for an appointment. We ask that you contact the office as early in the day as possible either by phone or letter. PLEASE no attendance issues by email!  Your student will be issued a pass and we can have your student ready when you arrive!

Driving/Parking Rules & Information
Cars parked in the school parking lots are required to be registered and have a parking permit. The annual fee for a parking permit this year will be $25.00. Parking permits will be issued to only Juniors and Seniors and only to Sophomores with an extenuating circumstance. Parking applications for Sophomores (with an extenuating circumstance) will be available in the Counseling Office. Students need to bring their driver’s license, vehicle registration and $25.00 to the Counseling Center to obtain a permit. Parking permit tags from last year are NOT VALID.

Other driving/parking rules:
Do not block the road right-of-way to traffic. State Law mandates that fire lanes must be clear at all times. Do not stop or park along the driveway. Be aware…the drive around the school building is ALWAYS ONE-WAY!!  You must also STOP at the stop signs and yield to pedestrians. Failure to obey the driving/parking rules may result in a loss of driving privilege on campus and/or being cited by law enforcement. The stops are enforceable 24/7, 365 days a year.

Participating in Sports???
If you plan to participate in fall sports this year, you must have a sports physical on file before trying out. Athletic forms are in the main office or athletic office.

TC West Athletic Boosters Website
The Traverse City West HS Athletic Boosters has a website designed to keep you up to date on all Titan events. The site will have information on team schedules, Booster events, scholarship information, promotions, and a new online store offering both Titan gear & regular apparel. Bus Passes at West Senior High
Due to liability issues, we will no longer be able to accept bus pass requests over the telephone. You may submit a letter to the main office by 1:00 pm, send a fax to 231-933-7506 or email your letter to either Sherri VanDyke at vandykesh@tcaps.net, Patricia Burrows at burrowspa@tcaps.net or Krista Gusler at guslerkr@tcaps.net to request a bus pass for your student. Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Please “check in” at the Main Office when visiting our school. All visitors are asked to sign in at the main office and wear a visitor name tag while on campus. Thank you!

Message from the West Senior High PE Staff
