Traverse City Area Public Schools Named
2012-2013 AP Achievement District

Traverse City Area Public Schools is one of 539 school districts in the nation and one of only 39 school districts in Michigan to be honored by the College Board with a place on its
AP District of the Year Awards: 3rd Annual Honor Roll for opening Advanced Placement (AP) classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on an AP Exam. TCAPS was also
recognized on the College Board’s 1
st Annual Honor Roll in March 2011.

In 2011-2012, 764 TCAPS high school students enrolled in 18 Advanced Placement courses and completed 1159 AP exams. This is a twelve percent increase in student participation from the 682 students who took AP classes during the 2010-2011 school year. The percentage of students achieving a 3 or higher on an AP Exam, the score typically needed to obtain college credit, also increased from 74% to 74.4%.

Being named an AP Achievement District is tremendously important for TCAPS students and parents, as it confirms more students are taking advantage of rigorous learning opportunities and performing at levels that allow them to earn college credit while still in high school. Students’ participation and achievement on Advanced Placement tests can save college tuition costs as many colleges, including NMC, award credits based on successful AP test completion,” remarked TCAPS Superintendent Steve Cousins.

This recognition is a very nice testament to the hard work and commitment by our high school instructional leaders who continue to provide support for students to not only lead them to successful graduation, but to help them become ready for learning beyond high school,” Cousins emphasized. “It also speaks to the teaching excellence of our elementary and middle school staff who helped set the stage for students to engage and excel in college-level studies.”

Traverse City West Senior High School is a comprehensive school home to 1,748 students, grades 9 -12.  A caring staff is committed to creating a learning community in which all members will be: treated with dignity, honesty, respect, and trust, encouraged to be positive contributors, provided multiple opportunities and strategies to be successful, and where quality work will be an expectation. Excellent opportunities are provided in mathematics, social studies, language arts, and science, as well as fine arts, foreign language, and physical education. Additionally, our music and sports programs are outstanding and competitive.

Currently, we offer over 132 different classes including 17 Advanced Placement classes, four vocational programs on-site, dual enrollment with Northwestern Michigan College. Articulation agreements with Davenport and Ferris State Universities.  College level Linear Equations and Calculus III on-site partnership with Ferris State University and extensive on-line learning offerings.  Student services are offered through the center-based special education program, gifted and talented program, dual enrollment, academic assistance (provides academic support within the classrooms and tutoring opportunities for individuals at risk of failure), and the Career Tech Center.

We have also created three small learning communitites within the larger West structure in which all students have been placed into one of the three neighborhoods, Athens, Olympia, or Sparta.  Students now have even more opportunities for personal relationships with staff mentors and an individualized high school experience within each neighborhood.  With the addition of our new advisory structure within each neighborhood, all students now have the opportunity, through a systemic college and career planning curriculum, to develop an electronic portfolio to be exhibited through student-led conferences.

We are very proud of the recognition Traverse City West Senior High School received as one of the nations best high schools by the Washington Post, for our outstanding Advanced Placement enrollment and scores, our highly competitive athletic programs, our professional quality music and theatre productions, and our award winning fine arts department.  Traverse City West Senior High is a first class school that honors the contributions of all of its students and staff and encourages excellence in a respectful, caring learning community.

The mission of Traverse City West Senior High School is to educate our students to be knowledgeable, responsible, and productive citizens in a safe learning community that respects and celebrates diversity, creativity, and excellence.

If you are unable to find what you are looking for on our Web site, please contact our Main Office at 933-7500 and we would be happy to assist you.
