World Language Programs

Elementary Curriculum

TCAPS provides elementary world language instruction to all PreK-5th grade students in the district. Second language learning is an amazing opportunity for our children. Research proves that younger children are at an optimum time in their development to learn an additional language with fewer inhibitions and to gain near native pronunciation.

Students in grades K-5 receive 30 minutes of Spanish instruction twice a week from a certified teacher.   Students in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme* receive Spanish instruction daily for 30 minutes.  The highly interactive lessons use a variety of methodologies to introduce and build the Spanish language and culture with the students.  In addition, students are encouraged to complete online lessons that are available on SOL (External LinkSpanish Online Link) to reinforce what is being taught in class.  New SOL lessons are introduced each week.  Students log in using the same username and password used on the laptops at school.

Resources

Secondary Curriculum

Middle school and high school students may continue studying Spanish, or they may opt to study Anishinaabemowin, Chinese, French or German. Certain other languages may also be available through online resources. Middle school students may earn high school world language credit if they meet TCAPS’ requirements. High school students may choose to continue their second-language skills throughout their high school career since TCAPS offers Advanced Placement courses in French, German and Spanish. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in world language courses at Northwestern Michigan College once they have exhausted the opportunities offered at the high schools. At the secondary level we also offer global study opportunities to our students, with teacher-led trips and exchange programs to France, Germany, Mexico, and Spain.
