Second Grade
Long Lake has 2 Second Grade Teachers:
Introducing Linda Melvin:
Welcome to second grade at Long Lake Elementary School! My name is Linda Melvin and I am thrilled to be a part of the Long Lake family and have been for over 15 years. Wow, time sure flies! This year is sure to be fun-filled too! I live in Traverse City with my husband and my two children.
My background in education began in Ohio at Bowling Green State University, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree. After teaching a few years, I decided to obtain my Master’s degree with Marygrove College. Currently I am involved with the Language Arts curriculum and planning for TCAPS and I am also continuing my professional development. (We’re never too old to learn!) I am implementing Teaching for Understanding and the Artful Thinking model both in conjunction with Harvard. With these philosophies I look carefully at curriculum, the arts, questioning, and student work to further their understanding.
Thank you for all the love and support you give your child. Yours is the most important foundation of all! Please stop by to introduce yourself; I’d enjoy getting to know you better. Also, feel free to contact me!

Introducing Michelle Brown:
Long Lake’s collaborative culture, commitment to excellence, and celebration of children’s thinking make it a school of distinction. It is an exceptional place to be!
I have been an educator for 20+ years. I am a Michigan State University alumnus and I have also earned my Master’s Degree in Gifted and Talented Ed. from the University of Virginia. I’ve taught 2nd-6th grades and I have also worked as a resource specialist servicing elementary classrooms kindergarten through sixth grade. I have been fortunate to be involved in a few of Harvard’s projects such as Teaching for Understanding, Looking at Student Work Collaboratively, and Artful/Visible Thinking. This summer, I attended the Lucy Calkins Writing Institute and I am excited to celebrate writing with students and families at Long Lake!
On a personal note, I live in beautiful Leland with my husband and daughter (Maggie). She comes to Long Lake with me and is proud to be a Panther! As a family, we enjoy rock collecting along the shores of Lake Michigan, swimming, hiking, campfires, visiting relatives, solving puzzles, going to the library, cooking, and shopping at our local farmers’ market. There are many “small moment” memories that I will always treasure.
I look forward to partnering with you in your child’s education! Welcome to our 3rd grade community!
