A note from Terri Sheldon, Principal Long Lake Elementary

Hello! My name is Terri Sheldon and I am delighted to act as Principal of Long Lake Elementary. I have been with Traverse City Area Public Schools for 18 years serving as literacy coach, Reading Recovery Teacher, District Support Specialist for Elementary Language Arts and now principal.

I grew up in the area and then left for Michigan State where I earned my Bachelor’s degree. Three weeks after graduating, I moved out to southern California with my husband. I taught in a private school in Orange, CA and in Long Beach Unified School District. When our first daughter was born, we moved back to northern Michigan to be close to family. I worked for Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools for five years when we first returned. I earned my Master’s degree shortly before beginning with TCAPS. I have continued my professional learning through Reading Recovery training, Teaching for Understanding and Visible Thinking (both programs from Harvard started at Long Lake,) Columbia University Teachers’ College for Reading and Writing and Harvard’s Instructional Rounds.  

My husband and I have two daughters; one graduated from Michigan Tech and now lives in Paso Robles, CA and works as a biomedical engineer.  My younger daughter is a junior the Honors College at Grand Valley State University studying special education.

I love being outdoors in all seasons and enjoy time in the UP.  I am also an avid reader and gardener.
