Introducing 1st grade teacher Sally Thompson:

Hello!  My name is Sally Thompson and I have been teaching at Long Lake for ten years, first in fourth grade and most recently in first.  My husband and I have three grown children.  Our oldest and her husband recently returned from their Peace Corps service in Panama and are now attending graduate school in Ann Arbor.  Our middle child is teaching fifth grade in Detroit and busy planning her wedding for this summer.  Our youngest attends Alma College where he is studying communication and art.  Like you, we feel very fortunate to have been able to raise our children in this beautiful area in Michigan.
 
I graduated from Alma College (where two of our three children attended) with a B.A. in elementary education and a minor in science.  I taught pre-school part-time for ten years while my children were young.  I returned to school and received my ZA endorsement (early childhood focus) from Central Michigan University in 1999. I am currently taking classes in reading and literacy and serve on the district's science committee.
 
I was fortunate to be involved with the In-Math Project through Western Michigan University a few years ago.   Along with a few other teachers from TCAPS, we focused on understanding student thinking within the Investigations Mathematical Curriculum adopted by our district which enabled us to support other teachers using the curriculum. I was also involved in a three year project that promoted student understanding through the use of thinking routines. These routines, along with visible and artful thinking strategies, encouraged a thoughtful exchange of ideas and a deeper understanding of concepts introduced in the classroom.  Along with other TCAPS teachers, we were introduced and supported through this project by staff from Harvard University.
 
I am delighted to be working at Long Lake and truly appreciate the wonderful support we get from our parents and parent support groups.  Thank you for your interest in our staff and school!
