Long Lake has 1 - 4th/5th Grade Blended Class

Introducing 4th/5th grade blend teacher Tammy Lantz:

They say that time flies when you are having fun, and life as a teacher proves that to be true.  It’s hard to believe that I’ve been teaching since 1984 because it feels just like yesterday!  During my career I have taught elementary, middle and high school grades. After completing my Masters and Educational Specialist degrees at Michigan State University, I also taught at the college level. First I taught at a small college outside of Philadelphia, PA.  Then I was fortunate enough to teach for three years back at Michigan State. During the time I taught Teacher Education courses, I specialized in elementary social studies and language arts.  It was a joy to teach future teachers at MSU, but I missed having my own classroom.   It was a great pleasure to join Traverse City Area Public Schools and once again work directly with children.

I feel fortunate to have been at Long Lake when we started working with Harvard Project Zero staff to create the Artful Thinking program.  Using thinking routines and art to help children connect to the big ideas of the curriculum has been a marvelous experience, and I had the chance to spend a week at Harvard in the summer of 2007 to continue sharing the work and great thinking that your children are doing at Long Lake Elementary.

On a personal note, although the rest of my family lives in Lansing, my parents also have a cottage just south of Elk Rapids. My parents, brother, his wife, children and grandchildren come up north as often as they can. I love spending time with my family at the beach. You might also find me rooting the MSU Spartans on to victory during football and basketball seasons!

I’m so happy that you’ve joined us at Long Lake Elementary. We are a community of learners who value the fun of participating in a culture of thinking and engaging with the big ideas. It’s a great place to live, learn, and grow!

Joys!
