WORLD LANGUAGE NEWS from Victoria Derks
Estimadas Familias,

¡Buenos(as)! It seems amazing that it is already May! The students have soaked up so much Spanish it has been fun to watch them! They have a great number of questions that they can ask and answer, such as:

  • ¿Cuál es tu nacionalidad? What is your nationality?
  • ¿Dónde vives? Where do you live?
  • ¿Te gusta Michigan State? Do you like Michigan State?
  • ¿Cuál es tu nombre? What is your name?
  • ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? What is your phone number?
  • ¿Cuál es tu color favorito?  What is your favorite color?
  • ¿Qúe te duele?  What hurts?
  • ¿Qué es esto? What is this?

There will be one more CAAP test this year for students in grades 3 and 4. Students should be reviewing body vocabulary, the Entrevista skit, and the following questions:

  • ¿Cuál es tu nombre? What is your name?
  • ¿Qué necesitas? What do you need?
  • ¿Qué te duele? What hurts?
  • ¿Qué es esto? What is this?

We hope to take this test on the laptops with Moodle- an exciting technological application for World Language.

Students have enjoyed the writing activities in “El Diario” (the journal). It has given them an opportunity to write simple sentences and to express themselves in Spanish- something they do proudly. They even had a chance to report “Nieve” (snow) as the weather in mid-April!

Fifth graders learned how to use a headset and record their voices on Moodle. Energy levels were high as they spoke into the microphones and subsequently listened to themselves speak Spanish. They took a proficiency test that assessed reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish. Much of the information was challenging for students, but they worked hard and did their best. This test will give us a baseline to see how our students are progressing after one year of Spanish.

If you have any questions regarding la clase de español please email me at derksvi@tcaps.net. I am at Long Lake on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

¡Saludos!

Long Lake LEAP Update:
Track season began on April 2nd for close to 30 Long Lake 4th and 5th graders, and the team had their first Track Meet against other westside schools on April 17th. The team had a great showing with some strong individual and relay team performances. I want to thank the parents who helped out, as well as all the parents who came out to cheer. I was really proud of how our kids stuck around to the very end to encourage their teammates. If you don’t think it mattered, then you didn’t see the smile on Russell Brown’s face as he was running the mile and nearly lapping the field. His teammates were lined up along the track cheering him on, and I couldn’t help but think that was a great moment for Long Lake Elementary! The next meet is scheduled for May 8th at West Middle School at 5pm. The All-City Meet will be held May 14-16 at Central High School.

The team practices after school on Monday through Thursday. Coaching the team this year are Dan Deal and Margaret Kjeldgaard, with help from Steve Oosse and Steve Eveleigh. The kids are working very hard, so come out to one of the upcoming meets and cheer on our Long Lake Team. Coach Deal says the TC West Track coaches should be excited about the talent that’s coming their way in a few short years.

Team members are:
Alex Eveleigh, Kate Eveleigh, Cameron Carlson, Skylar Gourlay, Aubrie Deal, Maddie Medler, Hope Aspenleiter, Aaron Kjeldgaard, Cyle Schmuckal, Cadin Schmuckal, Tacey Looze, Branden Wolfe, Abby Rickert, Abby Bohamed, Alex Bohamed, Taylor Metz, Joshua Panek, Samantha Fewins, Nick Rueckert, Natalie Toothman, Abby Klco, Tegan Elkins, Sophia Thurk, Jessica Rinehart, Maggie Molter, Cole Johnson, and Russell Brown. In addition, we have 3 students on our team representing Westwoods School: Jared Oosse, Atlas Rosenburg and Andrew Schaub

Good Luck Panthers!!

¡Feliz Primavera! Happy Spring!

It is hard to believe that we are two-thirds of the way through the school year…time flies when you are having fun!

Before Spring Break we continued working on La Entrevista (the interview) with a partner and performing in front of the class. A video of this skit and the script can be viewed in SOL lesson number 15. We also began writing in Mi Diario (My Diary) on a regular basis. Students are learning new conversation starters: ¿Qué es esto? (What is this?) and ¿Qué necesitas? (What do you need?) It is exciting to see how students are incorporating the Spanish words into their daily routines. We continue to review vocabulary that was presented at the beginning of the year.

I encourage students to review the Spanish learned in the classroom by accessing SOL (Spanish Online Link) lessons on Moodle at http://moodle.tcaps.net. Students are encouraged to review prior lessons after they have completed the assigned lesson for the week. The songs and vocabulary clips at the top of the page are a helpful review tool. If your child does not have access to the internet at home, time is provided at school to access the site.

If you have any questions regarding la clase de español please email me at derksvi@tcaps.net.

Spring Pictures
Timeless Image will be at Long Lake on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. They will be taking class photos that can be purchased for $6.00. In addition, they will take individual, “fun” pictures of the students who bring their picture form and money. Forms will be going home mid-April. These photos are different from the fall pictures where all students are individually photographed for the yearbook. Students are encouraged to bring “props” with them if they want it to be included in their individual photo.

Dress for the Weather
As spring approaches, so do the varying temperatures and playground conditions. Please make sure that your child(ren) are dressed appropriately to go outside every day. Students are allowed to wear flip-flops to Long Lake; however, they need tennis shoes for the playground and PE class. Those students without tennis shoes for outdoor play will stay on the concrete.

From the School Social Worker, Mrs. Kathleen Blazejewski
After Spring Break, I will be starting “Changing Family” small groups to support children whose parents are no longer living in the same house. The groups will meet for 30 minutes once a week (8-10 times) with children close in age to each other. The goals of the group is to find support and understanding from others going through similar experiences, understand feelings, changes, and positive coping and communication strategies.

Confidentiality is a must to participate. I will work with your child’s teacher to set up a time that works well within the school day.

Any questions, please call me on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday at 933-7838. If you would like your child to participate, please stop by the office to sign a parent permission form. I am looking forward to working with your child.

From our Music Teacher, Mrs. Longcor
The students have been working hard all year to get ready for their spring performances. Mark your calendar for these special dates and times.

  • Grades 1 & 2: Wednesday, May 2nd, 3:00 PM
  • Grades 3, 4 & 5: Thursday, May 3rd, 3:00 PM

Library News from Mrs. Wodek
March has been an exciting and successful reading month as the students have recorded their reading minutes to travel around the world. Many classes have traveled the distance between two continents! March 12th, we had nine foreign exchange students from West Senior High read stories and answer questions. These students represented Spain, France, Germany, China, Thailand and Lebanon. During March Reading Month, we began learning about the Summer 2012 Olympics to be held in London. We will continue to learn more and count down the days to the start of the games on July 27, 2012.

In addition to keeping track of reading minutes, the library has mailed out a Fezzy from each class to an international address. This is a unique way for students to connect with the world. You can follow the Long Lake Fezzys by going to the website: www.fezzywog.com Login information includes: email: wodekkr@tcaps.net and password: llmc (Long Lake Library Media Center). We will be able to follow these Fezzys indefinitely. Thank you to Long Lake families who provided some of the addresses.

In May, we will have a special guest visit our school for two weeks. Jelly (pronounced Yelly) Wien, 16, will be visiting from the Netherlands to fulfill an English Internship. Jelly is part of an exchange program and spent two weeks at West Senior High in October. We look forward to her visit and will share more programming information next month.

Thank you for encouraging your child to read!

Mrs. Wodek

Long Lake VIP’S (Very Impressive Panthers)
We started a new program on Fridays in the lunchroom to recognize 2 Panthers from each class who have consistently followed our lunchroom expectations of quietly walking in the cafeteria, making their food selections promptly (only putting on their tray what they can eat), sitting and eating while using their inside voices, and cleaning up their areas on and under the tables before they depart the lunchroom.

Panther VIP Table
The honorees get the privilege of sitting at a special table with other VIPs. This table is covered with special paper that they can write on and play games like tic-tac-toe and hangman. We place individual name cards and a special treat on the table for each student. Ask your child more about this!

Our first group Panther VIPs were:

K-McManus
Kelsie Gallagher & Darlene Wilcoxen

WORLD LANGUAGE NEWS from Victoria Derks
Estimadas Familias,
¡Buenos(as)!
Isn’t it difficult to believe that March is upon us? The school year will be over before we know it! It has been such an honor to witness the enthusiasm the students have to further their Spanish vocabulary. How remarkable it is that for some students, Spanish is the third language they are learning to speak. It is no wonder the libraries are embracing a GO GLOBAL theme for the month of March! Whether it is their second or third language, the students’ progress to date has been impressive. How lucky I feel to be on this journey with them!

The second CAAP test was given last month. Hopefully your child(ren) shared the results with you. If not, the blue test copy should be easy to locate inside the Spanish binder. Unlike the first test last November, this test required the students to speak and write in Spanish - a bit more challenging! If you see room for improvement encourage your child(ren) to practice online using the SOL lessons (accessed via http://moodle.tcaps.net). We plan to continue to use one class per month to work on these lessons at school.

The students have begun honing their acting skills during their work with La Entrevista (The Interview) skit. The skit is set-up as a question/answer session between two people and conveniently includes much of the vocabulary they have learned to date. In order to prepare, they watched a DVD of the skit being performed while lip-syncing the words in the subtitles, repeated the dialogue together as a class, and practiced reading and performing it with a partner. Hollywood here they come!

If you have any questions regarding la clase de español please email me at derksvi@tcaps.net or leave a message on my office phone (933-7835). I am at Long Lake on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

From our Librarian Kristi Wodek
Pull out your maps and world atlas; Long Lake students are going to be Reading-Around-the-World in the library during March. Students will need to record the minutes read outside of school. Reading can take place after school at Extended Day. Each week they will return their signed reading log to the library. For every 100 minutes read, they will get two stamps in their passports.

In addition, each classroom will be competing as a whole to travel around the world. Be sure to see the large map on the library windows to see how far your student’s class has traveled.

Finally, each class is mailing a fezzy wog, trackable frog, to an international destination. Recipients will log on www.fezzywog.com to let us know where the frog has arrived and to share a few comments about the location. Our hope is that the frogs will travel to many places and give our students an opportunity to learn more about the world. Be sure to support your students reading at home. You can read to them, they can read to you or they can read to themselves.

Feel free to stop by the library any time. Volunteers are always welcome. To think creative locally you need to think globally!
Kristi Wodek 933-7819 Thanks!

Lost It Found It Box Last Call
Please come and take a look at our Lost and Found Box located at the back of the Cafeteria. All unclaimed items will be donated in the near future.

Tips for Staying Healthy
Wash your hands when they are dirty and BEFORE eating.
Do not cough into your hands.
Do not sneeze into your hands.
Above all, DO NOT put your fingers into your eyes, nose or mouth!

Cough Drops at School
Cough and cold season is upon us. Some throat lozenges are allowed at school without having a medication authorization on file such as N’ice Clear Throat Discs, Robitussin Cough Drops, Ludens, Sucrets (regular), Halls or Maximum Strength Halls Plus, Vicks Menthol Cough Drops, or Vicks Cough Drops (all flavors). Lozenges with package directions giving specific time intervals, maximum dose with 24 hours, or that contain dextromethorphan or benzoate, are NOT allowed.

Cold and Flu Season
If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, has a rash, sore throat, or running a fever of 100 degrees or greater, please keep your child home. Students should be fever-free and symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. If a student becomes ill during the school day, parents will be contacted to take him/her home. If a youngster is sick, but you feel he/she can come to school as long as they stay inside, please reconsider: A student well enough to attend school will be considered well enough to participate in outside recess. Here are some strategies to minimize the cold and flu season:

  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow
  • Wash hands thoroughly, use warm water and soap, rubbing vigorously for 15-30 seconds
  • Avoid crowds
  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Sleep and regular exercise will help keep the immune system strong
  • Once exposed, rest and liquids are very helpful in the recovery process to reduce fever and promote the body’s defenses to fight the virus

    Have a healthy winter!

WORLD LANGUAGE NEWS from Victoria Derks, our Spanish Teacher
¡Hola familias! This month we have been learning how to say different body parts in Spanish. Students have been singing Cabeza, hombros, rodillas, pies (Head and shoulders, knees and toes) regularly in class. We are playing several games to review all of the vocabulary that has been introduced this year. It is important to spend time reviewing what we have learned so that students can recall the vocabulary. This can be challenging because students cannot just memorize Spanish for a test. It needs to be used over and over again so that students can build upon what they have already learned.

Students will be taking the second CAAP test for Spanish this month. It will be helpful to review shapes, emotions, and body parts. Students should also be able to answer the following questions in complete sentences in Spanish: ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?) ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? (What is your favorite color?) ¿Te gusta...? (Do you like?) and ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?). Remember that SOL is a great way to review the lessons we have covered in class. One class period this month, time will be provided for all students to access the SOL lessons. Any additional time on SOL will be beneficial.

If you have any questions regarding la clase de español please email me at derksvi@tcaps.net or leave a message on my office phone (933-7835). I am at Long Lake on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

¡Saludos!
Señora Derks

A Note from our PE Teacher Mrs. Ray
Hooray! The snow is finally here, now we can have some winter fun with outdoor PE classes.

During the winter months I will be holding some of our PE classes outdoors for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding fun. It is important to dress for the weather on these days, as everyone is required to participate. I would encourage students to bring an extra pair of socks and gloves/mittens to keep in their locker for these special days! I cannot wait to get outside and explore our new school property!

Congratulations…..
As a follow up to an article in our January newsletter, we would like to congratulate former Long Lake Elementary student Brianna Rickert, she was also selected by her teachers to be a member of the West Middle School Student Council.

From the School Social Worker, Mrs. Kathleen Blazejewski
There are 2 pieces of information I wanted to pass along to you.

1.    As a part of our conflict resolution and anti-harassment lessons, we teach and use the “I-statement.’ This is a form of communication, which expresses thoughts and feelings in a non-blaming way with a calm and respectful tone. It is a way of expressing oneself that has been found to be very helpful in many areas of our lives. It also helps in taking responsibility for oneself and practicing assertiveness skills. It is a way of expressing oneself that can be very helpful in various places, situations, and people. So, feel free to use with your children as well!

“I feel _________, when_________.

I wish (would like) ________.

Or, “ I don’t like it when ____. Please ____.

Parents Invited to Share Views for Continuous Improvement of LEAP
Parents are essential partners in building a quality LEAP program at TCAPS. The quality and caliber of LEAP programs is highly influenced through the positive relationships, skill building, and collaboration among coaches, students, parents, and the TCAPS LEAP team.

We are asking parents to provide feedback regarding LEAP program communications in a brief online survey. We want to better understand the services and support that may best meet your needs in delivering high quality programs for students. Our goal is to continuously improve the LEAP program and we invite you to share your views. This survey will be available now through February 17th. Thank you for sharing your feedback.

USATF Update

Two of our Long Lakers just completed their lengthy Cross-Country season. After earning All-City honors at the end of our TCAPS Cross-Country season, Aubrie Deal and Russell Brown began training with a running club in Kingsley to compete in the USATF Junior Olympics. In addition to training to run at a higher level, they each had to also train themselves to run a new distance. In the state of Michigan, elementary Cross-Country is a 1 mile run. In the USATF Junior Olympics, it’s a 1.86 mile run.

After advancing through the State and Regional Meets, Aubrie and Russell finally ran in the National Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on December 10th. The Meet was held on Whispering Pines Golf Course, and featured 3,000 of the top runners in the country from ages 7-17. Aubrie placed 29th out of 204 runners. She ran a personal best time of 11:48, and missed earning All-American honors by less than 6 seconds. Russell placed 155th out of 224 runners, and ran his personal best time of 12:39.

Both kids are grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this event, and to have witnessed some truly amazing young athletes from all over the country. A special thanks to all who supported these kids through donations.

Congratulations Aubrie and Russell. You represented the Long Lake family very well!

WORLD LANGUAGE NEWS from Victoria Derks
¡Bienvenido! Welcome back!

We are having a great time in Spanish. We spent this week reviewing what we learned before vacation. Students were introduced to shapes and emotions vocabulary. They learned that words in Spanish are either masculine or feminine. Usually masculine adjectives end in –o and feminine adjectives end with an –a. Students also learned how to answer some new questions: ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? (What is your favorite color?), ¿Te gusta…? (Do you like?) and ¿Qúe color es…? (What color is…?). We continue to review what we have learned since the beginning of the year.

Next month, students will be taking the next CAAP assessment. I encourage all students to practice the Spanish learned in the classroom by accessing SOL lessons on Moodle. SOL lessons are assigned the second meeting day of each week. Students are encouraged to review prior lessons after they have completed the assigned lesson for the week. The songs and vocabulary clips at the top of the page are a helpful review tool. If your child does not have access to the Internet at home, time is provided at school to access the site.

If you have any questions regarding la clase de español please email me at derksvi@tcaps.net or leave a message on my office phone (933-7835). I am at Long Lake on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

¡Saludos!

When Should I Keep My Child Home from School?
Whenever a child complains of not feeling well on a school day, parents are faced with the decision of whether or not to send the youngster to school. Generally speaking, if a child is sick, he/she should NOT come to school. If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, has a rash, sore throat or running a fever of 100 degrees or greater, please keep your child home for at least 24 hours after these symptoms are resolved. See the communicable disease chart in Healthy Learner’s section on page 27 of the Handbook for further information.

Run Panthers Run!!!
Two of our 5th grade Panthers have extended their cross country season by competing in the USATF Junior Olympics. On November 12th, Russell Brown and Aubrie Deal competed in the Michigan Association Meet in Northville, MI. Russell placed 3rd among the boys, and Aubrie placed 2nd among the girls. On November 19th, they both participated in the Midwest Regional Meet that included runners from Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. In that meet, Russell placed 6th and Aubrie placed 2nd. Both kids have advanced to the National Meet to be held in Myrtle Beach on December 10th. If you see them around school, wish them good luck at Nationals!

Car Line Pick Up Procedure
If you will be picking up your student at dismissal in the car line, please display your visor sign so we can quickly and easily find the right kiddos for you!  If you have not had an opportunity to get a visor sign, stop in the office or have your child pick one up. Please pull all the way forward to the newly installed Stop sign. Once there, we can load 3 vehicles at one time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Earning Our Way to Camp!
The 5th grade sponsored the LL Craft Show Luncheon on Saturday, November 19th. Lunch was served from 11-2 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All profits from the lunch go to fund 5th graders’ experience at science camp in June. The camp facilities allow students to be outside in nature to understand local habitats in forests, lakes, and even a bog. “Although an expensive undertaking, the learning experiences there are phenomenal,” says 5th grade teacher, Tammy Lantz. “That is why the luncheon is such an important fundraiser for us.” Fifth grade teacher, Jennifer Wohlfert added, “Although we are only half way to what we need to fully fund our camp experience, it’s humbling to know that we earned 100% profit due to the generous donations from so many local businesses. It’s an economics lesson in and of itself when students realize that we do not have any expenses for this fundraiser.”

Under the leadership of 5th grade parent Margaret Kjeldgaard, teams of parents and students worked throughout the luncheon serving hot dogs and chips or soup and salad. Each lunch choice also included a dessert and a drink. Special thanks go to all of the fifth grade students who walked throughout the craft show advertising the lunch and taking delivery orders. “It was a lot of fun, but a big responsibility too,” said one fifth grader. “I felt like a waitress. It was awesome,” said another. Some craft show vendors made a special point to compliment the students on their service, and said that it was really helpful to have food delivered so that they could eat and keep their craft booth open.

The luncheon was profitable as a fundraiser because so many businesses and parents generously donated food, paper products, and their time. We hope the whole Long Lake community will support these businesses because of all they have done to support our learning opportunities for our fifth grade students. It is very important for us to reach out to our neighborhood businesses. From the bottom of our heart, we thank the following supporters:

Sail Inn
Terra Walters and LL Plumbing
Oleson’s Food Market

Long Lake Grocery
Fieldstone Market and Deli

News from the Art Room
In art this year we have been rolling up our sleeves and jumping into paint! A great way to prevent stains and spills on clothes is to have your child bring his or her own art shirt to school, where it can be kept in a locker until art class. Art shirts don’t have to be fancy! Old t-shirts, stained dress shirts, or anything that is large enough to be pulled over their regular clothes would be great!

Look forward to seeing some masterpieces!

LEAP SPORTS Update
From Coach Dan Deal:
Our Long Lake LEAP Cross-Country Team wrapped up its season on October 19 at the All-City meet. On a cold and windy night, the Panther Team competed against 16 other area schools. Russell Brown was the overall boys’ champion. Aaron Kjeldgaard placed 3rd among 5th grade boys. Aubrie Deal was 1st among 5th grade girls.

The previous weekend, the team competed in the Traverse City Central Cross-Country Invitational. This event included the Traverse City schools as well as schools from across the region such as Kingsley and Suttons Bay. In that event, Aubrie Deal, Russell Brown, and Aaron Kjeldgaard all won medals, placing 1st, 5th and 9th, respectively.

In all, our teams competed in six meets this year. We have some talented 4th graders who can lead the team next year and position Long Lake among the top schools with deep traditions in both Track and Cross-Country. Congratulations to the team on a great entry into Cross-Country!

Girls Basketball report:
Many 2nd – 5th grade girls were on hand for the girls’ basketball clinics held at Traverse City Central High School on October 15th and Traverse City West Senior High School on October 22nd. Stay tuned for a list of Panther players, coaches, and upcoming events as the Girls season progresses.

Several Panthers were recently published in the 2011 edition of the Young American Poetry Digest. These students are sharing their poetry with the entire school daily in the morning announcements. So far we have featured the work of:

  • Jared Oosse
    Cheetah is lightning
    Chasing down an antelope
    Launching at its prey
  • Kate Eveleigh
    Apples
    Apples fall from trees
    Landing next to me
    Nice and green
  • Aubrie Deal
    Monkeys are always shy
But when they see what’s yellow
    They go bananas
  • Sydni Ohanesian

    Penguin Power
    Penguins look so cool
    Penguins are funny

Outdoor Clothing
Winter is fast approaching. Please be sure to properly dress you children for the weather. All students are expected to participate in outdoor recess and should wear a hat, gloves or mittens, boots, and snow pants. Feel free to send in extra socks, gloves, or pants in your child’s backpack and leave the clothing in their locker for emergencies. Please put your child’s name on all of their winter outerwear in case anything gets misplaced!

News from Mrs. Blazejewski
Hello Long Lake Parents!
It is wonderful to work with your children as a TCAPS school social worker in the Student Assistance Program at Long Lake Elementary! This is my 14th year working with TCAPS and my 4th year at Long Lake Elementary. My role is to be involved in various ways that can assist a child’s educational experience. This may involve school-wide activities such as our Panther assemblies that recognize our “Panthers of the Week,” visiting classrooms to address conflict resolution skills and anti-harassment, working with the social and emotional concerns of individual students or in small groups, meeting with parents about questions or concerns related to their child and networking families with community resources.

Some of my best experience has been gained by being a parent also, whose three children have now made it to young adulthood!! Please know my door is open to you as we work together to help your child’s school experience be a positive one! I am at Long Lake Elementary on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and can be reached at 933-7838.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Blazejewski, LMSW
(Mrs. B)

When Should I Keep My Child Home from School?
Whenever a child complains of not feeling well on a school day, parents are faced with the decision of whether or not to send their child to school.

Important Paperwork
Please be sure to turn in your student’s Emergency Card, Handbook Page, and Free/Reduced Lunch form to the office as soon as possible. Your child’s Emergency Card contains the information we would need if your child were hurt or ill at school. Thank you!

Who Can/Cannot Pick up My Child From School?
Parents, please make sure you list individuals on your child(ren)’s emergency card who can pick up your child(ren) from school. Do not assume that if you give a friend permission to pick up your child, that the school will allow it. Without a note, phone call, or name on an emergency card, we cannot release your child. Please respect this district policy.

Free and Reduced Meal Application
TCAPS' free and reduced meal application is now available online! Please visit
www.lunchapp.com. This option allows you to complete the free and reduced application online and submit it electronically, saving time and money. You will still receive an approval letter through the mail, but your application will be approved faster. If you have questions regarding the online free and reduced meal application, please contact TCAPS' Food & Nutrition Services at 231-933-1910. Visit the TCAPS Food Service website to view school lunch menus, nutritional analysis and food allergen listings, and family friendly nutrition information.

School Lunches
Please have children put their lunch money in an envelope with their name, grade, and teacher’s name and give it to their teacher first thing in the morning. Checks should be made out to TCAPS. It may be more convenient if you prefer to pay by the week rather than daily. If lunches are not all used in one week, they will be carried over to the next week. Lunch is $2.10 per day, including milk. You may purchase milk daily for $.40.

Medications
If your child is in need of medication (prescriptions or aspirin, cough medicine, cough drops) during the school day, and “Authorization for Medication” form is required to be on file in the school office prior to dispensing medication (prescription or over-the-counter drugs) to your child. The form must be signed by the doctor and parent. Also, students are not to bring medication to school; this is the responsibility of the parent. All approved medication must be in the original container. Your pharmacy will give you an additional labeled bottle for school if you request it.

Absences
Parents, please call the school before 9:30 a.m. if your child will be absent or late for school. If we do not receive a phone call from you, we will call and request a reason for the absence. Students will be marked “tardy” if they arrive at school after 9:00 a.m. Any student leaving before 3:58 p.m. will be marked “early withdrawal” for the afternoon. Excessive tardies and/or absences will be referred to the truancy intervention center. Our voice mail is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please call us at 933-7800.

End of the Day Changes
Our office can get very hectic the last 45 minutes of the school day. We need your help! Changes to the end of the day routine should be a rare occurrence. Please send a note in the morning if your child’s end of the day routine will be changed. If you must call with a last minute change, please do so before 3:15 p.m. Thank you for your assistance!

Birthday Invitations
So as to avoid hurt feelings or disrupt learning, we ask that birthday invitations not be distributed at school. We hope you support the reasoning behind this policy, and we appreciate your understanding.

School Picture Date September 19, 2011
Monday, September 19th is our school picture date. Every child will have his/her picture taken for our school files.
