Early Intervention in Reading (EIR)
EIR is a supplemental elementary school program in which the classroom teacher provides 20 minutes of extra instruction each day to struggling readers. Students read a new book each week, as the teacher assists students in decoding multi-syllabic words, discussing word meanings in context, and coaching for comprehension. Students practice summarizing stories and answering questions, read at home with their parents, and read to a younger reading partner at school. Assessments are performed to identify the students who are performing below grade level and post testing is used to help determine individual student growth in the program.
