Second semester is upon us, and we are in the throes of planning for next year already. On January 26th, we had our Parent Orientation Night. During February we will be conducting fifth grade visitations. Sixth and seventh grade students will be meeting with their counselors. Enrollment forms will be coming home for you to review and sign off on.

Please make sure you have Parent Teacher Conferences on the calendar. They are scheduled for March 8th, from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

We are making changes to our Spring Honor’s Night ceremonies this year. We will have two evenings to honor our students’ academic achievement. The 6th Grade Honor’s Night ceremony will be held May 29th, and the 7th and 8th Grade Honor’s Night ceremony will be held together on May 31st. The change that we will be making this year is to raise the standard for receiving an invite to this ceremony for 6th grade students. For a student to participate in this event, their cumulative grade point average will need to be 3.5. Seventh and eighth grade honorees will need to achieve a 3.0 grade point average as they have in the past. Over the next couple of years we will increase the standard for 7th and 8th grades as well until all three grades receive the honor at 3.5. This will put us in alignment with all secondary buildings in TCAPS. Please contact your child’s counselor or administrator if you have any questions.

Recently, the PTO did an outstanding job of organizing a Student Activity Night for all three grades. We are so incredibly grateful for their dedication, hard work and creativity. There were so many volunteers - parents and staff alike – coming together to help out in many different ways. The result was a fun-filled evening for our students. We would also like to publically thank Peegeo’s and Pepsi for their generous donation of pizza and pop. We at East Middle School are so blessed to have many caring families and community members looking out for us.

There is one area in which we could use your help. In order to keep all of our students safe, we would like to remind parents who either drop off or pick up their student(s) to please drive carefully in our parking lots and make sure that the traffic lanes are followed. We have had near misses with people pulling out in front of others or not watching their speed when there are many people coming and going. If we could all be a little more mindful as we drive, we will be able to do a better job of keeping all of our students safe. We thank you for your cooperation.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments we would love to hear from you.

Take care,

Cathy & Steve

Dear EMS Families,

Staff and students have been working towards common standards of behavior and expectations to help make East be a warm and welcoming environment for all. We wish for staff and students to feel safe, parents to feel like they are a partner in their child’s education, and students to feel like they have a voice in their school community.

This year, we have identified and defined our behavioral standards with the acronym East CARES. The CARES stands for being Compassionate - Assisting, Respecting, Encouraging others, and always Striving to do our best! We have been working with weekly messages that help to relate to the kind of environment we are trying to create.

Our counseling staff has been working with staff and students on a Unite against Bullying message. Every month, the counselors, along with a student Unity Council, plan a day where they ask staff and students to wear orange to show that we are Uniting against Bullying. They have also been planning an activity each month to promote the same. This month, for example, the Unity Council will be asking staff and students to sign a pledge, and they will each receive an orange bracelet to show visible support. We thank our PTO for their support in this endeavor.

The response from our student body has been fantastic! The goal is a respectful and safe school environment. We welcome any ideas and thoughts that you might have towards that end as well.

We wish you and your family a restful winter break. See you in 2012.

Respectfully,

Dr. Cathy Meyer

Dear EMS Families,

It is hard to believe the first marking period is over and the holiday season is upon us. With basic operations up and running, we all should take time to reflect on our year thus far. Most important are the children – where they are and where they are headed. Teachers have already done many formal and informal assessments of your children. With that information, the teachers are busy addressing and adapting curriculum. Our library staff asked the students what they were most thankful for at East Middle School. We wanted to share some of their comments with you below –

from the mouths of Babes…

  • The after school activities
  • Being able to go here
  • Fun classes
  • How awesome this school is
  • All the electives we can choose from
  • For all the teachers putting in hard work so we students can learn
  • A clean school
  • Fridays
  • Our own lockers
  • Our counselors
  • Creative living class
  • The education
  • Teachers to help us to learn
  • Teachers and lunch
  • The music program
  • My awesome teachers
  • Art class
  • Gilly Blue (the fish)
  • The big library
  • The help and support of friends and teachers
  • The library contests
  • The principals

We, at East Middle School, are thankful for all of you – your support, commitment and for sending us such incredible students. Together, we make an unbeatable team for your children, our students!

Dear East MS Families,

None of us want to think our child is bullying other children or are a victim of being bullied. However, research is showing that one of five children is bullied at some time during his/her school years. Bullying can affect many aspects of a child’s’ self-image. When children feel anxious about their personal safety, it significantly affects their learning.

Research states four types of bullying to include the following: physical, verbal, relational or indirect, and reactive victims. Physical bullying includes hitting or kicking the victim. Verbal bullies use words to hurt or humiliate another person. Relational bullies try to convince their peers to exclude another person and/or cut the victim off from social connections. This type of bullying is linked to verbal bullying and usually occurs when children spread rumors about others. Reactive victims can act like a bully and a victim. Reactive victims often taunt bullies. They will approach a person who has been bullying and say, “You better not bug me today, otherwise I will tell the teacher, and you will be in trouble.” Statements such as that might provoke a bully into action.

When bullies use the electronic medium to carry out their bullying, it is referred to as cyber bullying. This can happen through texting, emailing, posting messages or pictures on facebook or other websites. Many times this kind of bullying can be more harmful.

Bullying can be significantly reduced in schools if teachers, parents, and children work as a team against bullying. If your child is bullied: Do talk about it. Your child might only feel safe opening up to you. Do take it seriously. Do role-play with your child and practice how to speak to a bully. “Leave me alone” and walking away is great advice. Don’t keep this information to yourself. Inform your child’s principal as soon as possible.

Bullying and being bullied cannot be ignored. Our counselors and staff have been working on a yearlong campaign to “Unite Against Bullying.” October 31 was the kick off to this campaign, and we asked staff and students to wear orange in support on that day. Each month, there will be some positive education and efforts to support our students in providing a safe and respectful environment. We would like to invite you to join us in Uniting Against Bullying.

Dear EMS Families,

Prior to school starting for your children, teachers and administrators get together for planning and professional development purposes. It is a way to make sure we have a great start to the school year. One of the first things we did as a staff was envision what kind of school year we wanted to have for your children and for ourselves. A group of four or five teachers sat together and wrote a 4 – 6 line poem depicting this vision. Then, we put all of the poems together. The end result is what you will find below. We wanted to share it with you – our families – because the words and feelings behind it will guide the work we do together as a staff.

EMS Dreams
Live life passionately!
In a place that is gentle, calm, and supportive
And students and staff are greeted each morning
We want to see all learners excited
To celebrate learning
A place where we
Can find a happy face at every turn –
A fun and safe place to learn

A place of supportive challenge
Where our efforts and individualism are respected.
The focus is on learning skills
Encouraging students to be their best.
Show that passion and all the rest!

All who enter are valued, celebrated, and respected.
We work, create, and collaborate towards shared goals.
Personal best should be stressed.
Everyone feels a sense of belonging.
At EMS, in a city by the bay, all learners seize the day and lead the way!

My dream, our dream, their dream is to experience
A unique, safe and most fun place to learn
Where all may study and
Learn with grace.
Needed and valued in an evolving, connected place
Where we dream forth with wonder!

The learners all enter with hopes in their hearts…
Because they feel welcomed and invited by
The love and wonder of this place
Where all know they are supported and accepted
Laughter, joy and smiles abound
In the safest place imaginable.

Each week I get to meet
With whomever I need to see
Choices are allowed and encouraged
To enhance all learning experiences
We all motivate and create.

A clean working place that is organized and safe
There would be no bullies or anyone mean
Because there is laugher everywhere
And we all care
Sharing respect, admiration, and learning
So that this learning place becomes filled with joy!

September 16 - E-Newsletter Message

Dear East Middle School Families and Students,
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! We hope this summer treated you well and you were able to spend quality time with family and friends.
This summer has been a busy one at East Middle School. All three core academic wings, including the classrooms, are sporting new tile flooring. The hallways and lockers also received a fresh coat of paint. It is a comfortable and bright space in which to learn.
The EMS staff is excited to see all of you and have been working hard to ensure that this school year will be a positive and enjoyable learning experience for all. Our vision statement is to support lifelong learning through Connectedness, Innovation, and high Achievement expectations. In response to that mission, the staff had set teaming for all students as a priority in 2011-2012. Most of our sixth graders experienced this, but we felt it was important for all of our students so that we are able to know them as individuals in their school life. Teaming, in simple terms, is defined as teachers sharing students. We feel it is important to give teachers some common time to talk and plan for their shared students so that they are able to give the students the academic support and differentiation that will help them excel. Our middle school students will eventually transition into academies, which is a similar concept at Central High School. We are ensuring alignment with our educational partner and providing the best educational environment possible for all our students.
There have been a few staff changes that took place this summer. Brandi Reynolds, 8th grade social studies teacher; Michele VanKleek, special education teacher; and Liz Bert, Orchestra instructor have all moved on to different opportunities. We wish all of them well in their new endeavors. With these changes come new faces. I would like to welcome Jeremy Rintala, who will teach 6th grade social studies; Stephanie Krive, who will teach French I, and Tia Crater, who will serve as a special education resource teacher. Please introduce yourself to them. They are all talented educators.
TCAPS has hired Scott Robertson as our Learning, Enrichment, and Athletic Programs (LEAP) Director. Scott will be helping EMS specifically with the coordination of middle school athletics. He is coming to TCAPS as a former athletic director from East Grand Rapids Public School. He has a world of experience in K-12 programming and a passion for providing a wide range of extracurricular opportunities for youth and community members of all ages.
Throughout the summer, I took some time to read current research surrounding parent involvement and its impact on student achievement. Research indicates that the more parents are involved with the school, the higher the academic success of the student. Our students have had tremendous success, but we continue to reach higher. I sincerely believe that your active involvement can make this a better place for students, staff, parents, and community members. Please attend our monthly PTO meetings and ask us about volunteer opportunities. Come visit a class and use Parent Internet Viewer to keep current with classroom assignments and students’ grades. Use the EMS website to access weekly announcements, and of course, do not hesitate to email or call any one of us, if you have any questions or concerns. Your presence is always welcomed and appreciated, and most importantly, your child does remember your support.
I wish you a great start to the school year. We are excited to see all the familiar and new faces alike.
Respectfully,

Cathy Meyer-Looze
