| May 4, 2012 Library NewsTHE BOOK NOOK - NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY
Mrs. VanderKlipp is looking for a few parents to help scan the Library bookshelves at the end of the year. As you can imagine, with all of the use our library gets, not to mention all of the love the books get, our shelves can get a bit out of order. We need to do some shelf reading. This entails making sure the non-fiction books are in the correct Dewey decimal order, the biographies in the correct order by individual and author, and our Fiction and Everybody shelves in alphabetical order. This can go fairly quickly if a few friends of the library are involved.
This will also allow us to locate any lost books after our inventory, and make sure the library is ready to go at the start of the school year!
If you can donate a few hours of your time, please call me or e-mail me. The last week of Library will be the week of May 21st, where I will still be reading / sharing with the classes, but they will not be checking out books. This would be the ideal time to accomplish this task. Thank you!

Notes from Eastern's Library
Please consider using plastic bags for your child to bring home and bring back their library books. This will help protect our well-loved books from soggy mittens, snow pants, water bottles, etc. Thank you!
March is "Reading Month,” but every month - every day - should be focused on reading!
Reading will make life easier for your children in the future. The more they read, the better they will be able to spell, increase their vocabulary and write using proper grammar...all tools that are necessary to be successful.
Consider this fact: Students who read the most also read the best, achieve the most, and stay in school the longest.
These days it's harder than ever to carve out time to read. Kids are spending less and less time reading because of all of the other choices available. With our busy schedules and all of the competition with new technology, it's even more important to read to your kids or to provide them with books to read!
It is never too late to start! Mix it up...you can even take turns reading to each other. For reluctant readers, try to find something that will capture their interest: the kids page in the newspaper, specialty magazines, a kindle, graphic novels and yes, even comic books! Most comic books use a wide range of challenging vocabulary words. A word of caution, however, please scan these first to make sure they are age appropriate. The good old classics are always a safe bet: Archie, Peanuts, Donald Duck, Casper, etc. No one can resist Calvin and Hobbes or Mutts comics! You can find many of these inexpensively on-line, at used bookstores, garage sales or in-town at a comic book store on 8th Street.
I encourage you to turn off the TV (or computer, video game, iPod), grab a good book and start reading! :)

Notes from Eastern's Library
Hello, I’m Suzanne VanderKlipp, known to the students as "Mrs. V.” I am thrilled to join Eastern's staff as your new Librarian. I know I have (very, very, very) big shoes to fill after Sue Miles, and I promise do my very best! I’ve always adored books and come from a family of voracious readers. I have volunteered in my sons’ school libraries from their first days in TCAPS (they're now 15 and 18) and was instrumental in raising funds for a Long Lake branch library. I've been a substitute in most TCAPS libraries, and come to Eastern after two years as Courtade Elementary’s Library Media Paraprofessional.
Since Sue was my mentor there, Eastern seemed the most natural fit for me. I love the cooperative feel, the excellent staff and the wonderful students. It feels very much like home already!
The most important part of my position here is reading to your children. Research indicates that reading aloud to children substantially improves their reading skills, as well as their written, oral, and auditory skills. In addition, children who hear read-alouds have an increased positive attitude towards reading.
I will continue to build a resource for the students and families at Eastern. The library is a great place to keep in touch with your child’s progress and be an active part of the Eastern community. One way is to volunteer during your student's library class period, helping kids locate books or with other tasks. Also, I can always use assistance checking in books and putting them in alpha/numerical order, to prepare for shelving. The best time for this would be anytime between 8:45 AM - 9:30 AM, Monday-Thursday. If you can help out, let me know - or feel free to pop in whenever you have a few extra minutes, even just to say hello.
It's a privilege for me to be part of the Eastern Family and I look forward to meeting you personally. Together, we can make a difference with literacy! My hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:40 AM - 2:50 PM.
