Is online course learning the correct pathway for your child?
The first step in deciding whether online course learning is the right option for your high school student is to have an open discussion with your child about the idea of online courses and the responsibilities that come with it.
Next, have your child take the online course readiness survey to determine if online learning is right for him/her. Your child should print a copy of his/her survey answers and the total score with the online recommendations that come with it.
Students should then make an appointment with their school counselor and bring a printed copy of the survey answers and score to the meeting. The counselor will discuss the following with your student:
- His/Her survey results
- Student readiness
- Time management abilities
- Overall liklihood of success
- Requirements of taking an online couse, such as scheduling regular meetings with a mentor, providing grade printouts to the mentor, the ability to commit to a certain number of hours a week to each course and the designated area within the school that students are expected to be during the period the course is taken.
After discussing the above, if both the counselor and your student believe that he/she can be successful with online course learning, then a permission slip will be sent home for your endorsement.
Students will work with their couselors to determine appropriate classes and the time of day the course will be taken. Here is a listing of courses available through TCAPS from the Michigan Virtual High School and courses available through CyberEd Schools.
