Seventh Grade

     Human Reproduction and Sexuality

  • The 7th grade Human Reproduction and Sexuality curriculum will be presented in the 7th grade required Life Science course. The goal of this unit is to acquaint the students with the male and female reproductive system. This includes adolescent sexuality and healthy versus risky behaviors. It will be presented over a period of approximately 5-7 classroom days. This unit will be presented in a scientifically accurate manner similar to the approach used in teaching the other body systems, i.e., digestion, respiratory, endocrine, etc. The teaching will be done in a manner that is non-judgmental.

Parents will be notified of the unit and its content. Parents will also have the opportunity to view the curriculum and materials, including a sample list of student questions from the previous school year, during a parent meeting or individually upon request. Parents may choose an “opt out” status for their student from any day or the entire unit. Students who do not participate in this unit will be assigned an alternate health education assignment.
      Content
  • Knowledge of the structure and function of the male and female reproductive system
  • Changes in physical, social and emotional adolescent behavior
  • Adolescent sexuality, healthy versus risky behaviors

The unit will be taught by the 7th grade science teachers in a co-educational setting. The unit will also emphasize avoiding sexual victimization. The unit covers the definitions of heterosexuality, masturbation, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT), slang terms, oral and anal sex. The unit does not, by law, cover abortion.

The boys and girls will be separated for a question and answer session on one particular day, with the class to be conducted by the school nurses. Students may write “difficult to ask” questions using the question box format.

Answers to all questions will be medically accurate and contain the legal or medical/health consequences of the sexual behaviors. Uncommon sexual practice questions will not be revealed or discussed in the classroom setting. Any unanswered questions or questions relating to values regarding sexual practices will be referred back to the parents or trusted adults. The school nurse is also available to provide discussion of unanswered questions on an individual basis upon request.
