Empowering Middle Year Learners Through Character Building
TCAPS’ middle school students recently participated in the first of two anti-bullying sessions conducted by school educational speaker and ventriloquist, Richard Paul, focusing on positive attitudes, building self-esteem, and promoting a safe, positive learning environment. The educational presentations help define how to prevent school violence, promote self-esteem, put an end to school bullying, resolve conflict, improve success skills, and build character. Future sessions will be conducted during second semester. This program was made possible through the support of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Opportunity to Learn the Native Language,
Anishinaabe, and Earn High School Credit

TCAPS is now offering an Ojibwe Language and Culture Course. Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade may earn high school credit after earning a passing grade in this Native language course. This course provides a great opportunity for students to learn the original Anishinaabe language of the Odawa and Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes area and to develop an appreciation for a Native language and culture. Students will use the language in the classroom for greetings and daily routines, becoming familiar with its sound system, writing system, daily vocabulary, and phrases.

“We are proud to offer a Native American world language course to our middle school students in grades 6-8,” commented TCAPS’ Associate Superintendent Dr. Jayne Mohr. “The purpose of the course is to develop an appreciation for the culture, and speak a native language. We are grateful to our partnerships with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and Suttons Bay Public Schools in making this opportunity possible for our students.”

Please contact TCAPS’ Associate Superintendent Dr. Jayne Mohr at (231) 933-1777 for more information. To enroll your student please contact TC East Middle School at (231) 933-7300 or TC West Middle School at (231) 933-8200.

World Language Opportunities for Middle School Students
Middle school students now have more full-year foreign language course options. Full-year courses are available in French, German, Spanish, and Chinese (online course). High school credit will be earned with successful completion of a full-year foreign language course.

For those students who may not want to take the full-year course but would still like to experience a foreign language, semester course options are available in French, German, and Spanish.

Eighth Grade Students Can Earn High School Graduation Credits
As part of their regular course work, all TCAPS 8th grade students can earn one high school credit in the following subjects: math, science, and foreign language. Up to three credits can be earned when students pass designated tests in these content areas.
No sign up required.
