Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Parent Committee Meetings
Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Indian Education Parent Committee met and agreed by consensus to the following officers, meeting dates, and the mandatory public meeting date.

2011-2012 Parent Committee Meeting Schedule:
Parent Committe meetings will be held on the following dates:
- September 12, 2011 - Election of Officers for 2011-2012 School Year

- February 13, 2012
- March 12, 2012 - Annual Public Meeting
- June 11, 2012 - End of Year Meeting

The Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Parent Committee was established to provide input and assistance in developing Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Program proposals, to review the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and to develop increased awareness of new and existing Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Programs.
All parents and guardians of Anishinaabe students are encouraged to attend these informative meetings and to share their thoughts and opinions.

What is Indian (Anishinaabe) Education?
Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Program meets the unique needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students helping them to achieve the challenging state standards. The program provides assistance early in students’ educational experiences by focusing on elementary and middle school age children. Plans are underway to expand the program in 2010-2011 by offering a mentoring program for high school students.
The program is funded by a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and is administered through the Office of Indian Education. The program is further supplemented through additional grant monies from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians’ 2% Funds.
What Services Are Provided?
- Academic assistance to meet the needs of eligible students.
- The SuccessMaker software program is utilized in to assist students in math, language arts, and reading; provides small group (1 teacher to 7 students maximum) instruction directed to each student’s needs; and PlayStation/V-Smile games in math, language arts, and reading.
- “Summer Bridge Workbooks” available to Indian (Anishinaabe) students in PreK – 7th Grade
- Liaison with school, family, and/or outside agencies on behalf of students’ needs
- Cultural assistance, materials, resources, and presentation assistance to TCAPS’ school and/or teachers
- Indian certification assistance
Who Can Access Services?
- Any Native American or Alaska Native student in the Traverse City Area Public Schools District
- No blood quantum requirements to participate in the program
- Parent/guardian self-identification required
- To apply, complete a Student Eligibility Certification Form (506 Form)
- Forms may be obtained by calling 933-5850.
How Does Academic Assistance Work?
- Students may be identified for academic assistance through the Indian (Anishinaabe) Education Office or by a teacher, parent, or self-referral.
- Academic Teacher Assistants work with the student’s teacher(s) to implement an individualized program.
- Teacher Assistants work an average of two hours per week with individual students.
