TCAPS High Schools Ranked Among "Best High Schools" in The Washington Post High School Challenge
TCAPS’ Central High School and West Senior High School have been recognized by The Washington Post’s Best High School list. The Washington Post’s Challenge Index measures a public high school’s effort to challenge its students and prepare them for college. The index is determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP) or other college-level tests given by the school in 2010 by the number of graduating seniors. The Post rated over 1,900 high schools nationally. Of the 37 Michigan schools that made the list, TC Central High School placed 24th with a 1.399 index and TC West Senior High School placed 26th with a 1.387 index. This is an indication of the wonderful work being done by teachers, support staff, and principals in these two schools! Read more
In March, TCAPS was also one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation and one of only 29 school districts in Michigan to be honored by the College Board with a place on its Advanced Placement Achievement List for opening classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher.
About the Freshman Mentoring Program
Peer mentoring programs for freshman students entering Central High School and West Senior High School are designed to ease the transition for incoming students during their first year in high school by helping students feel safe and comfortable in their new environment and to ensure successful academic achievement. The mentoring program offers new students the opportunity to build relationships with older students who can share their experiences and advice on settling in to a new learning environment.
Student mentors receive training prior to meeting with their mentees. Students begin meeting with their mentors at the start of the school year. For more information about the Peer Mentoring Program at your school, please contact:
