Talented and Gifted Program

Special programs for identified talented and gifted students are available for students in grades 4 through 12. "Gifted students" programs are enriched and accelerated academically. TCAPS' programs recognize that gifted students often need help in areas of self-esteem, working cooperatively, and learning to challenge themselves and each other, all in anenvironment which will help them grow and reach their full potential.

Students are screened for the program while they are in the third grade. Recommendations for admission to the program are based primarily on test scores, in addition to teacher and parent input. In grades 4, 5 & 6 students identified as talented and gifted are offered the opportunity to attend a magnet school located at Central Grade School. The school enrolls approximately 144 students in the three grades. Students unable or unwilling to attend the magnet school receive individual attention at their designated school.

At the junior high level, special classes are offered in the four core academic areas: math, science, social studies andlanguage arts. Each junior high offers one class in each subject at each grade level for students in the Talented and Gifted Program. At the Senior High, special classes are offered in language arts and mathematics, and many students may pursue honors level courses, advanced placement, and dual enrollment at Northwestern Michigan College.
