Young Fives
The Young Fives Program is for children who will be five years of age by December 1st, but who are not yet ready for a traditional Kindergarten Program. The program is child-centered and provides additional time for emotional, social, intellectual, and physical growth through activities that foster development in these areas:
- Creative Expression: art, music, literature, and natural world
- Social Development: interacting with others, helping, sharing, taking turns, playing cooperatively, culture, and citizenship
- Intellectual Development: thinking, planning, problem solving, comparing, reasoning, drawing conclusions, numbers, symbols, and science
- Physical Development: small and large muscle development, nutrition, and safety
The curriculum and learning environment support the developmental needs of each student, and prepares each child for success in kindergarten the following school year.
The program is a half-day / every day program offered at TCAPS' Central Grade School and Westwoods Elementary School for kindergarten age children with late birth dates (after May 1). Taught by a certified early childhood teacher, children attend a daily morning session or a daily afternoon session. There is no cost to families for this program. Parents provide transportation.
