The Olympia Neighborhood would like to introduce you to some of the teachers on our 9th and 10th grade core academic teams. Each team is made up of an English, science, social studies, and math teacher with a special education co-teacher. These teachers work together to plan lessons and units, trouble-shoot issues with students, develop consistency of expectations across disciplines, and teach the skills and habits students need to succeed in school and as citizens. They meet each week during common planning and lunch times, and they work closely with me, their administrator, to best meet the needs of your students. Please contact them with concerns about your child via email or a phone call.
The staff of Olympia were happy to recognize the following students in the month of September for demonstrating a positive attitude toward the school standards at West. These students were recognized in a brief meeting on October 4th with a limited edition Olympia t-shirt, designed by a student at West, with help of Mr's. Gillespie and Kirby. Congratulations students!

9th Grade Team:
Kelly Rintala – English
This is my 7th happy year at West, though I've been teaching for a total of 9 years. After 5 years with upperclassmen, I am happy to move back into teaching 9th grade (something I taught before coming to West). I love my job, my family, reading, and anything that requires me to be outside.
Charlie Maxbauer – Social Studies
My name is Charlie Maxbauer and I am a fourth generation Traverse Area resident. I attended Traverse City Senior High School, Northwestern Michigan College and Central Michigan University. I've had the privilege of teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grades for TCAPS during my first nineteen years. I'm currently in my fourth year at TC West teaching United States History and Geography. My wife Susan and I enjoy boating, biking, landscaping and visiting with our two adult sons.
Rachel Noller – Science
Rachel Lardie Noller (proud spouse of WSH teacher David Noller, both proud alumni of TC schools!) This is my16th year of teachingbiology (honors and regular) and anatomy & physiology. I enjoy all science, music (I studied vocal performance in college also), friends, family, science fiction, and the great outdoors!
Jim Bunek – Math
Hi, my name is James Bunek and this will be my 4th year teaching high school math at WSH. I have taught Algebra I, geometry, and Algebra II. I enjoy watching and playing sports. I coached freshmen baseball at TC West for 6 years.
10th Grade Team:
Jaime Castle – Math
I graduated from Western Michigan University; this is my 11th year teaching, 10 of which have been done at West! I am married with a 3.5 year old daughter who is excited to meet her new brother in January. I enjoy reading and doing most outdoor activities around our amazing community...as long as it's not in the snow!
Rob Hofstra – Science
I am in my fifth year of teaching chemistry at West and my eleventh year in the profession. My hobbies include running, fishing, paddling, coaching (football and hockey), making ice cream, and most of all, spending time with my family outdoors in Mother Nature.
Laura Wright – English
I've been teaching for 10 1/2 years (5 1/2 at West Junior High, and 5 at West Senior High). I've taught 8th - 11th ELA (Honor's and Regular), Creative Writing, Speech, Debate, and Newspaper. When I'm not teaching, I like to hang out with my family by the lake, read, and do anything that's "artsy" or "crafty."
Andy Wares – Social Studies
Hello. My name is Andy Wares and this is my fifth year teaching social studies at WSH. During that time I have taught Economics, Civics, and World History. I'm excited to get to know your sophomore student through my role as part of the tenth grade Olympia team.
Special Education Co-teacher:
Ryan Cormier
My name is Ryan Cormier, and this is my 4th year teaching at West Senior High. My hobbies include playing baseball and hockey, frolfing, listening to music on my vinyl records, watching movies, and winning my Fantasy Football leagues. I coach freshman baseball (4th year), and I also announce all West football and basketball games. I am a 2007 graduate of Grand Valley State University...Go Lakers! |

| September 16, E-Newsletter MessageHello Parents,
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I’m thrilled to be returning for my 15th year at West Senior High and my fourth as an administrator. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Communication: One of the best qualities of West is our open line of communication between staff and parents. If at any time during the year you have questions or would like to speak to your child’s teachers, please call or email the teacher directly. Our school expectation is that you will hear back within 24 hours. Our email system allows you to email any teacher by using the first 8 letters of their last name and the first two letters of their first name, followed by @tcaps.net.So, I'm longst@tcaps.net. All of these staff email addresses are on the school's website under the staff tab. Speaking of which, there are many updates, announcements, events, and links to great information on our website. If you haven't accessed it yet, the address is www.tcaps.net/wsh.
Automated Messages: If you did not receive AlertNow email and/or phone messages last year, or your phone or email contacts have changed, please be sure to contact Mrs. McFarlan in the Olympia office to provide a working phone number and email address so you can stay in the ever increasing paperless communication chain. More and more, we have moved away from mailings as a cost efficiency measure, and AlertNow emails and phone contacts are essential for keeping you informed.
Dress Code: Please carefully read the note from Mr. Tibaldi regarding dress code and review it with your son or daughter. We have high standards regarding school appropriate dress and will not hesitate to send students home who are not upholding these standards.
One-to-one Computing: All students will have a netbook this year to use in school and to take home. These netbooks have become as essential to class, and in some cases replaced, as a textbook. Please take some time at the beginning of the year to discuss where your child will charge it nightly, how to store it properly, and appropriate school related usage of it. Students will be expected to have a charged netbook or other personal computer in class. For those students or families who do not wish to accept the school computer, computers are available on a limited basis for students check out and use during the day. Students who opt out of taking responsibility for a school-issued netbook will still be expected to complete any work that teachers may assign that requires computer usage. Our library is available before and after school as well as during the day, and the building is equipped for wireless access for any student who does not have web access at home.
School Calendar: The TCAPS 2011-2012 calendar has been finalized and there are some changes, most notably, students have exams the week of Thanksgiving with school on that Wednesday. You can access the calendar at www.tcaps.net which has all important dates and vacations notes. Please carefully consider our school vacations when planning your family time.
Parent Internet Viewer: PIV is available for your use. Login information has changed for 2011-12. You will receive a letter from us with the new information. An AlertNow message will be sent to inform you when the letters have been mailed. Login information cannot be provided over the phone, but you can have your child see Mrs. McFarlan in the Olympia office and she will give him/her the information. If you prefer, you can call and ask for it to be mailed and she will send it to your home address on file, or you can come on in and pick it up. We don't send it via email or grant phone requests for security reasons. This system is not typically operational until the end of September.
Opportunities: I strongly encourage both students and parents to get involved and take advantage of the wealth of unique opportunities that West Senior High is able to offer. In addition to our counseling, college planning, and academic support services, West offers a wide range of courses, clubs, and activities for students of all interests and ability levels. Parents are welcome to attend any of our Parent Advisory Meetings, and many volunteer opportunities are available throughout the school year. More information is available through the Main Office (933-7500) or our Olympia Neighborhood Office (933-7707).
Thank you for the opportunity to work with your son or daughter during the 2011-12 school year.
