High School Diploma’s for WWII and Korean War Veterans

To provide special recognition for the service and sacrifice of military veterans of WWII and the Korean War, the Public Act 181 of 2001 authorizes the Board of a Michigan school district to award a high school diploma to a WWII or Korean War veteran. The law permits a WWII veteran who left high school between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 for immediate military service and did not subsequently receive a high school degree to now apply for a diploma. Korean War veterans who left high school between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 may also apply. Family members may also apply on the behalf of a living or deceased veteran.

The application requires a copy of the veteran’s discharge from military service indicating honorable service between the dates of December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 or June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955. The applicant’s signature certifies the remaining information.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to be able to award a high school diploma to veterans who meet Public Act 181 criteria. For more information please contact Mary Beth Stein at (231) 933-1718.

Central Grade School Fifth Grade Students Make Connectin with Peace Corps

To bring deeper meaning to the fifth grade curriculum covering Africa, TCAPS’ Fifth Grade Talented and Gifted (TAG) students are learning global geography in a humanitarian way. Ms. Jaye Lynn Trapp’s fifth grade class has developed a connection with Uganda, Africa through periodic letters received by Margaret Mimnaugh, who is serving in the Peace Corps in a small village called Bulera in Uganda.

Through Margaret’s letters and the stories she shares, students have gained insight into what life is like in Bulera. For the past several years Central Grade School has held fundraisers to send school supplies to students in Uganda. Currently Ms. Trapp’s fifth grade class is collecting maps and beach ball globes from Michigan Geographic Alliance to send to Bulera Primary School in Uganda. In addition to sending school supplies to the school, Ms. Trapp’s students are also exchanging letters with the students in Bulera.

“I look forward to providing my students with the opportunity to connect with the students at the Bulera Primary School in the Buganda Kingdom,” commented Ms. Trapp. “My hope is that students in both countries will learn that the world is bigger than their own neighborhood.”

Please call Jaye Lynn Trapp at 933-5651 for more information.

Pirates of Penzance brings to life the most lovable swashbuckling, free spirited, crazy troop of pirates that you have ever seen. The musical includes a rollicking band of pirates, a bevy of giggling maidens and their “very model of a modern Major-General” father along with a dashing pirate apprentice, a fading nursemaid and a bunch of blundering policemen as the key ingredients for the charmingly ridiculous plot of Pirates of Penzance. It is produced and directed by Marilyn Tilley and choreographed by Lisa Reehorst with support of Tamara Grove, Central High School Choral Director, and under the supervision of Wendee Wolf-Schlarf, TCAPS’ Music Department Coordinator.

Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Please call the TC Central High School Box Office at 933-3573 for ticket information.

In addition to raising money for a worthy cause, “SPIN for STEP” raises community awareness about the realities of homelessness and ties in well with Homeless Awareness Week, November 15th – 21st. TCAPS’ STEP Program is grateful to Phi Alpha Theta ETA and Fitness Factor for sponsoring the fundraiser.
