Traverse City Area Public Schools is please to announce Traverse City West Senior High School Music Instrumental teacher Patricia Brumbaugh will be inducted into the American Bandmasters Association (ABA). The American Bandmasters Association was formed in 1929 by Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) as well as many other famous bandmasters of the day to promote Concert Band music. The current president is Joseph Hermann. Honorary live presidents include John Philip Sousa, Edwin Franko Goldman, A.A.Harding, and Karl King.

The purpose of the American Bandmasters Association is to recognize achievement and foster an increasingly high standard of excellence for the Concert Band and its music; helpfulness and fellowship among members; an increasingly higher standard of artistic excellence for the concert band, performers, conductors, and literature; and a constantly greater contribution through the Concert Band to the musical life and culture of all peoples. . The ABA honors outstanding achievement by inviting conductors and composers to membership. Membership is extended to the leaders of the wind band movement and is considered to be the highest honor given within the wind studies realm.

“This only validates what we at West Senior High already knew, that Pat is one of the best band directors in the United States,” said Joe Tibaldi, TC West Senior High School Principal. “Her dedication to students, work ethic, conducting skills, and knowledge of music has brought state recognition to the West Senior High School Band Program.”

Patricia Brumbaugh received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Olivet College in 1972 and a Masters degree from the University of Michigan in 1986. She is currently on her ninth year as Director of Bands at Traverse City West Senior High School where she conducts three concert bands, two jazz bands, and the TC West Senior High School marching band. In 1984, Pat was voted “Outstanding Young Band Conductor” in the nation by the American School band Directors Association, and in 2006 she was voted Outstanding Band Teacher of the Year in the state of Michigan.

Patricia will be introduced at a business session at the next ABA convention, which will be held in Charleston, South Carolina, March 3– 6, 2010. She will be asked to guest conduct one of the bands that will perform during the convention.
