Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce Blair Elementary School fifth grade teacher Danelle Brostrom has been selected to attend the Michigan We the People Summer Institute. Only twenty teachers are selected by the Michigan Center for Civic Education to attend the summer institution. During this unique opportunity Danelle will fly to Virginia and stay for three nights in the Constitutional Village on the Montpelier estate to study the Constitution and work with mentor teachers from Michigan.
Included in the institute will be tours of the Madison mansion and estate, as well as a look at the ongoing archeological works being conducted. All teachers will receive a free classroom set of We the People textbooks and experience the program’s signature activity, the simulated congressional hearing, first hand. Over the course of the four days, teachers will be divided into groups to prepare their testimony as constitutional experts before an ad hoc congressional committee, the very activity that the institute will prepare them to conduct with their classroom students. On the last morning of the institute the hearing will convene and participants will experience the power of the activity for allowing students to demonstrate the depth of their knowledge.
"Danelle's selection is extremely well deserved. It is a true reflection of her sincere dedication to the students at Blair Elementary School, our families, and our District,” said Bob Peters, Blair Elementary School Principal. “I have often referred to Danelle as a rising star because of her broadening skill base, her hard work, her enthusiasm, and her desire to be a lifelong learner and a first-class educator. We all share her excitement on being one of only 20 teachers in the entire state of Michigan selected for this summer fellowship. What an honor for Danelle!"
Danelle Brostrom is a fifth grade teacher at Blair Elementary School. She has taught for seven years, five of which have been at Traverse City Area Public Schools. Danelle recently completed her Masters Degree in Educational Technology from Michigan State University.
