On Saturday, April 25th, seventh and eighth grade students from Traverse City East Middle School competed in the 2009 Great Lakes Regional: Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Building Competition in Alpena, Michigan. TC East Middle School teams competed against high school teams from throughout Michigan.
TC East Middle School seventh grade was the youngest team in the competition and was awarded first place for their engineering evaluation. This is a presentation that they must give to judges to explain the building and operation of their ROV. TC East Middle School eighth grade team was awarded the Innovative Design trophy for being the only team to have hydraulics on their ROV. Student teams worked without adult help on their own time to prepare for the competition.
The MATE Center's mission is to help prepare America's future workforce for ocean-related occupations. The MATE Center utilizes information from employers to improve and develop educational programs with a focus on marine technology. The Center focuses on community college education and the creation of strong links between community colleges and high schools, technical schools, 4-year institutions, research institutions, and industry, government, military, and labor organizations.
