Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce Traverse City East Middle School eighth-grade student Michael Payne has been named first place winner of the State Level 2009 Law Day Essay Contest. The theme of the essay was A Legacy of Liberty to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial. On May 1st, essay winners will be presented with state level awards at the Law Day luncheon in Lansing, Michigan.
 
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated May 1st as Law Day. This day is an opportunity to strengthen our great American heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under the law. The State Bar of Michigan joins various local cars, businesses, schools, and other organizations in conducting programs associated with improving the public’s understanding of our justice system.
 
Traverse City East Middle School students who placed in the Grand Traverse, Leelanau – Antrim Bar Association essay contest include:
 
Meghan Brown              1st Place
Lucas Nielsen               2nd Place
Abbey Kaufman             3rd Place
 
These students each received a monetary award and will have the opportunity to read their essays on Friday, May 1st, between 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Traverse City Elks Lodge Law Day Celebration and luncheon.
