Traverse City East Middle School eighth-grade student Isabelle Sutherland has received top honors for her essay “My Personal Michigan Hero” in The America and Me Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Isabelle’s essay focused on her relationship with her grandmother, Mary Sutherland of Leelanau Peninsula. Her essay begins, “For twelve years I have heard hundreds of stories about superheroes, princesses, and knights in shining armor, but now it is my turn to share this story of an amazing woman. She answers to Mary, Mrs. Sutherland, Mom and, to me, Grammy.”
Over 5,000 eighth-grade students from all over Michigan participated in the contest. The final ranking of the top ten winners was determined by a panel of judges made up of Farm Bureau Insurance Executive Vice President Jim Robinson, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, and one teacher from last year’s winners.
Isabelle, along with the other top ten winners, will receive a plaque, a medallion, a $500 savings bond, and a cash award of $500. She will be honored at an awards banquet in Lansing on May 19th. In addition, the top ten finalists will meet with State Government leaders, be honored at Oldsmobile Park as special guest at a Lansing Lug Nuts minor league baseball game, and enjoy a luncheon cruise aboard the Michigan Princess Riverboat on the Grand River.
Please contact Allison Sullivan at 933- 7334 for more information.
