The National Geographic Society recently named Traverse City East Middle School eighth-grade student, Tori Fisher, a semifinalist in the 2009 Michigan Geographic Bee. In early January, fourth through eighth grade students throughout the state of Michigan held school bees to determine each school’s Geographic Bee winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, and the United States territories, the National Geographic Society invited the student with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.
Tori took a written test of seventy questions to qualify for the state competition. She will compete against 100 of the state’s best. The winner of the state finals will win $100, the National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World, and a trip to the 21st annual National Geographic Bee hosted by Alex Trebec in Washington, D.C. The winner will receive $25,000 in scholarship money, $500 cash, and a trip to the Galapagos Island with the “Jeopardy” Clue Crew.
Tori’s winning question and some of the other questions she answered were:
- Which city is located in the Australian Capital Territory?
- Ban Ki-moon plays a visible role in many world events because he is the Secretary-General of which organization?
- Sian Ka’an, a biosphere preserve and national park protecting approximately 70 miles of Caribbean coastline, can be visited on which large peninsula of Mexico?
- The Kiraly and Rudas mineral baths in Hungary’s largest city were built during the Ottoman occupation from the mid 1500’s to the late 1600’s. Name this city. (Tori’s winning question)
“We are very proud of Tori,” stated Steve Fisher, Tori’s father. “She has always been curious about the world around her, but we didn’t realize the extent of her curiosity. I guess those ‘Map of the United States’ placemats really paid off. We’re really excited to cheer Tori on at the State Finals.”
“Tori was cool, calm, and confident through the whole competition and took her win with a smile,” said Allison Sullivan, TC East Middle School Geographic Bee Coordinator. “She’s now preparing for the state competition by creating note cards on countries with facts about currency, languages, and history. I’m sure Tori will be pleased with her extra preparation when she gets her first question.”
The 2009 Michigan Geographic Bee will be held at the Bernhard Center at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo on April 3rd. The 2009 National Geographic Bee will be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. on May 19th and 20th.
