The National Geographic Society recently named Traverse City East Middle School eighth-grade student, Tori Fisher a semifinalist in the 2009 Michigan Geographic Bee. In early January, fourth through eighth grade students throughout the state of Michigan held school bee’s to determine each school’s Geographic Bee winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, and the United States territories, the National Geographic Society invited the student with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.
Tori took a written test of seventy questions to qualify for the state competition. She will compete against 100 of the state’s best. The winner of the state finals will win $100, the “National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World,” and a trip to the 21st annual National Geographic Bee hosted by Alex Trebec in Washington, D.C. The winner will receive $25,000 in scholarship money, $500 cash, and a trip to the Galapagos Island with the “Jeopardy” Clue Crew.
The 2009 Michigan Geographic Bee will be held at the Bernhard Center at Western Michigan University in Lansing on April 3rd. The 2009 National Geographic Bee will be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters on May 19th and 20th.
