Traverse City Area Public Schools would like to congratulate Traverse City East Middle School and Traverse City West Middle School students who participated in the Northern Michigan Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition. The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. The competition is sponsored by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1984 to promote math excellence among United States middle school students.
Participants from Traverse City Area Public Schools include:
TC East Middle School
Ian Cummings
Daniel Fedor 2nd Place
Cam Gibson
Jill Holstad
Christina Karakos
Victoria Krajenka
David Myers
Michael Payne 1st Place
Allyson Schultz 5th Place
Ivan Suminski 9th Place
Nonie Tompkin 3rd Place
Nicole Tubacki
The TC East Middle School team took first place for the second year in a row, beating twelve other area math teams. One hundred-eleven students participated, representing the best of thirteen area schools. Daniel Fedor, Michael Payne, Ivan Suminski, and David Myers each won trophies and $100 college savings bonds (donated by Fifth Third Bank) for their individual and team competition efforts. All students that placed received a trophy and a savings bond or gift card.
“MATHCOUNTS is a National competition for all students grades 6-8. I am proud of all the hundred twenty-three students from East Middle School who participated.” Commented TC East Middle School Math Coach, Mike Wilson. “Only eight can officially advance to the district level. Of our eight, perhaps five or six could advance to the State level. That is just fantastic. The students that really thrive in mathematics competitions get a steady diet of math at home and at school. As a coach, it is fun to see children stay after school and give up a weekend and spring break to solve math problems and talk problem solving strategies. This year was especially exciting because I was able to see my son participate and enjoy the competition.”

The TC West Middle School placed second, for and a $50 savings bond (donatedthe second year in a row, due to an outstanding team round. Catherine Conners, Angelo Vozza, Grace Weisner, and Trey Smith each won trophies by Huntington Bank).
"Our students have worked so hard to prepare for the MATHCOUNTS competition. They always arrive to our after school math problem solving sessions with such positive energy.” Said TC West Middle School Math Coach, Maria Taplin. “But our Math Club is more than just getting ready for the competition; we also pick an interesting math theme and make a Math Calendar with that theme. This year it was Fractals. The students sell the calendar and we use the profits to buy Origami paper to make three dimensional math models. So it really gives us the opportunity to look at math from different perspectives."
All of the participants are grateful to Pizza Hut for their donation of pizza for lunch provided to members of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers who acted as scorers, proctors, and judges during the competition. We would also like to thank the Kiwanis Club of Grand Traverse Bay, Fifth Third Bank, Huntington National Bank, and TBA Credit Union for their financial contribution to this year’s competition.
Selected members of the TC East Middle School and TC West Middle School Mathematics Club will travel to Detroit, Michigan to represent the area in the State MATHCOUNTS Competition on February 28, 2009.
