Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce the Board of Education’s appointment of Gary Appel to serve as a member of the school board. Appel will fill the board vacancy left by Amy Sutherland, who officially resigned January 5th. Gary Appel received a Masters Degree in Science Education from University of Michigan and a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Oakland University.
Gary has extensive career experience in the educational sector including a variety of teaching, curriculum development, professional development, and program management and consulting roles in K – 12 grade education over 33 years. He currently serves as a State Manager with Learning Point Associates’ federally funded Great Lakes East Comprehensive Center supporting the Michigan Department of Education. Gary has served on the board of Crystal Mountain Resort and has worked on a number of Traverse City Area Public Schools’ projects. Most recently Appel served as a volunteer, spearheading an effort to secure funding for a school nutrition and healthy lunch initiative. He also worked to secure $42,000 in grant dollars for TCAPS to initiate two science professional development projects with teachers.
Gary Appel’s appointment to the TCAPS Board of Education became effective after being sworn in on Monday, January 26, 2009 at TCAPS’ Regular Board Meeting. Appel’s term will run until the next scheduled election, November 9, 2009. After the November election the newly elected board member will take office within 10 days after the candidate receives notice of election via the Canvassers Report.
