On Monday, October 13th, twenty high school bands from Northern Michigan were showcased at the ninth annual Thirlby Marching Band Exhibition. The program began at 4:45 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. More than 1,200 band students participated at the extravaganza held at Thirlby Field in Traverse City and more than 1,600 spectators were in the audience. Bands were featured in the halftime shows of participating schools and performed from the smallest to the largest band with TC Central, TC West, and Petoskey being the last three bands to perform. The bands are evaluated and given suggestions on how to improve, but are not ranked in order by the success of their performance.
“The biggest lesson our students learn from the Thirlby Expo is how much they are appreciated by the community.” Said Jake Brumbaugh, Director of Bands at Traverse City Central High School.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the bands to perform in a great stadium and for each other.” Patricia Brumbaugh, Director of Bands at Traverse City West Senior High School, said. “We all take away ideas from the other bands, and the smaller bands really look forward to seeing the bigger bands.”
