In the 2007-2008 school year Traverse City Central High School (CHS) and Traverse City West Senior High School (WSH) tied for the Big North All-Sports trophy. Both schools tallied 83.5 points based on their finishes in the league. Points are earned on how each team finishes the competition. Six points for 1st place, five points for 2nd place, and four points for 3rd place, and continues down to one point for sixth place. Each school won championships in the following categories:
TC Central High School
- Baseball (tied with Petoskey)
- Girls’ Cross-Country
- Girls’ Down Hill Ski
- Football (tied with WSH)
- Boys’ Golf (tied with WSH)
- Hockey (tied with WSH)
- Girls’ Soccer
- Boys’ Tennis
- Girls’ Tennis
- Girls’ Track
TC West Senior High School
- Girls’ Basketball
- Football (tied with CHS)
- Boys’ Golf (tied with CHS)
- Girls’ Golf
- Hockey (tied with CHS)
- Boys’ Soccer
- Boys’ Track (tied with Petoskey)
- Girls’ Volleyball (tied with Cadillac)
Awarding of the Big North All-Sports Conference (BNC) Trophy began in the 1997 – 1998 school year. There are six high schools that compete in the Big North Conference: Alpena, Cadillac, Gaylord, Petoskey, TC Central, and TC West. TC Central High School has won this award seven times and this is TC West Senior High School’s fourth time to win the award. This is the first time, in the history of the award, that there has been a tie.
“TC Central High School is honored to have won the BNC All-Sports trophy. It is a credit to our student-athletes and coaches who put so much time and energy into their endeavors on and off the fields and courts,” said Cody Inglis, TC Central High School Athletic Director. “We are proud to share it with our neighbors from TC West Senior High School. We congratulate West Senior High and look forward to continued competition in the Big North Conference.”
Patti Tibaldi, TC West Senior High School Athletic Director says, “The quality of the athletic programs at both high schools is amazing, particularly considering that TC West Senior High School has only been in existence for twelve years. That Traverse City has been able to double their participation in athletics by adding a high school and still achieve such success is a credit to the community, coaches, and athletes. To tie for the All-Sports trophy defies all odds, but points to the ongoing parity of the athletics of both schools.”
