Traverse City Area Public Schools recently provided an old school bus to the Traverse City Fire Department (TCFD) for use in its emergency response training that was held August 19th – August 21st. The school bus, which was removed from service last year, provided a suitable simulation setting with an interior that closely mirrors that of a commuter plane.
The TCFD deployed specialized training scenarios on the bus such as passenger extrication with and without smoke and fire, turning the bus over on its side to simulate a crash and subsequent hazardous materials spill (NOTE: all fluids and fuel were removed from the bus in advance of the exercise). Specialized penetration and fire suppression equipment were tested.
The training simulation allowed local emergency response personnel to keep current on emergency response techniques, and provided a real world scenario for area first responders in general, and those based at the Cherry Capital Airport in particular, to gain experience in complicated emergency situations involving a plane or bus. After completion of the training exercises, the bus was returned to TCAPS and sold as scrap.
This initiative was a total community effort: TCAPS provided the bus, Ward Eaton donated the specialized wrecker / transportation services, and the TCFD team of emergency responders took part in training to expose them to the latest in emergency response and life saving technology using this unique training platform.
