Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce eight World War II or Korean War Veterans will be awarded high school diplomas this year. Veterans have the option to have their diplomas awarded in one of three ways: 1) participation in a high school commencement ceremony, 2) presentation at a school board meeting, or 3) receipt of diploma through the mail.
This year, five veterans will receive their diplomas through the mail, one will be presented with his diploma at the June 9th Board of Education Meeting, and two will participate in a high school commencement ceremony.
Korean War Veteran Henry Bradley, Jr. and World War II Veteran Leonard Popa, will
receive their diplomas at Traverse City West Senior High School’s Commencement Ceremony scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Kresge Auditorium, Interlochen Arts Academy. Mr. Popa will be graduating alongside his two grandchildren, Jordan Popa and
Nicole Popa.
Of the eight veterans receiving their diplomas, three will graduate from Traverse City West Senior High School and five will graduate from Traverse City Central High School including, World War II Veterans Edgar Mogle and Kenneth Phillips, and Korean War Veteran Dale McCauley.
Since the inception of the Public Act 181 of 2001 authorizing the board of a Michigan school district to award a high school diploma to a WWII or Korean War veteran, Traverse City Area Public Schools has been honored to present 43 diplomas to veterans who were not able to graduate with their class due to military enlistment.
