Ninth grader, Courtney Gorter, from Traverse City East Junior High School has advanced to the state competition in the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) “Voice of Democracy” contest. Courtney took first place in both the local and the district competitions. The topic for this year’s competition was “My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans.” Student written essays were submitted as recorded speeches of three to five minutes in length.
On December 8, 2007 Courtney was honored at the local VFW Hall along with two other East Junior High School students. Courtney, who won first place in the local contest, received a $500 savings bond, Nicole Helmboldt received a $300 savings bond for second place, and for third place Chris Gauthier received a $200 savings bond.
Courtney will be one of twelve students to be honored at the VFW’s Michigan district awards banquet on January 24, 2008. Results of the state competition will be announced at the January banquet. The State finalist will then move on to the national competition.
