Traverse City Area Public Schools is now offering expanded online course options for students in grades 9-12.  Students in grades 9-12 at TCAPS, as well as students who reside in the intermediate school district attendance area, are eligible to enroll. Students may opt to take online coursework and complete up to six high school credits per school year. Interested students and parents are encouraged to contact Steve Trahair at TC Central High School (933-3541), Charles Kolbusz at TC West Senior High School (933-7504), or Lance Morgan at Traverse City High School (933-5882) to further explore the option of an alternative virtual learning environment to support their individual learning plan. Registration deadline is 4:00 p.m. on September 26, 2007.

“TCAPS now offers students multiple pathways to achieve success that allow them to take their coursework online and earn up to six credits per school year,” remarked Dr. Jayne Mohr, TCAPS’ Associate Superintendent. TCAPS has received approval from the Michigan Department of Education and at this time is the only school district in Michigan that has received this approval to expand online independent learning options for up to twenty-five percent of enrolled full-time students. “We are pleased the Michigan Department of Education has chosen TCAPS to serve as a model high school for implementing independent learning options for our students. E-learning options are increasingly being offered by high schools as well as in post-secondary educational and business settings,” remarked Jim Feil, TCAPS’ Superintendent.

In 2006, the State of Michigan enacted the new Michigan Merit Curriculum to better prepare students with the skills and knowledge needed for the 21st Century global economy. The new graduation standards will go into effect with the class of 2011.  Students in Michigan will also be required to complete an online learning experience as part of the new curriculum. “Our work with the Michigan Department of Education will provide resources and partnerships that will benefit students and teachers to enhance the scope and quality of E-learning for our high schools and for the State,” noted Dr. Mohr.
