Traverse City High School students will participate in The Son of Blues concert to be held at the Dennos Museum, 1701 E. Front Street on Saturday, this evening, February 3rd, at 8:00 p.m.

Approximately 15 Traverse City High School students have been learning to play the harmonica this week during a special week-long Blues In Schools Program taught by Billy Branch, a blues harmonica performer and recording artist. In addition to teaching students various forms of the blues, Branch also provides lectures on blues history. The students will take part in tonight’s performance by award-winning blues harp player Billy Branch, which will include an overview of Blues in the context of African American history, student participation, and a demonstration of the Delta Blues and Chicago Blues styles.  Branch has recorded and/or performed with an incredible list of Blues legends including: Muddy Waters, Big Walter Horton, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, and Albert King.

The Billy Branch Blues In Schools Program is being offered through the 21st Century grant program that focuses on the development of a Community Learning Center as part of after-school programming at Traverse City High School. According to Donna Novak, CLC Coordinator at Traverse City High School, “The artistic applications from the Blues In Schools Program will help students apply themselves while building their self-esteem.”
