On Thursday, January 12th, Joseph Sobeck, a seventh grade student at TC West Middle School, won the school-level competition of the 24th Annual National Geographic Bee. Joseph was declared the School Champion and moves one step closer to a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Also taking top honors in the Bee were runner up, Hannah Trolz, and third place finisher Francesca Sydow.
The kickoff for this year’s Bee was the week of November 14th, with thousands of schools around the nation participating. The school winners, including Joseph, will take a written test and submit it to be considered for advancement in the competition. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee, to be held on Friday, March 30th.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and their teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geographic Bee National Championship on May 22nd-24th. The first place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galpagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expedition and National Geographic. ‘Jeopardy!’ host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals on May 24th.
The National Geographic Society is the world’s largest non-profit scientific and educational organization. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the Society works to inspire people to care about the planet. It reaches more than 400 million people worldwide each month through publications, films, radio, interactive media, and merchandise.
