On Thursday, April 12th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Traverse City Central High School will host a ‘Hair for HOPE’ event, to benefit Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program, and Locks of Love. Each of these programs depends upon human hair donors to create wigs and hairpieces for adults and children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. TC Central High School senior Nikki Schweitzer initiated the project, inspired by, and in memory of, her Aunt Lori, who passed away due to breast cancer.
It is the mission of Locks of Love to “return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.”The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. Locks of Love requires that hair donations be a minimum length of ten inches.
Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society. Thanks to many volunteers, thousands of free, real-hair wigs have been donated to women living with cancer. Created and funded by Pantene, these wigs are distributed through select American Cancer Society wig banks across the country. Requirements for donating hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths are as follows: The hair must be at least 8 inches long, free of permanent color, bleach, or other chemical treatments, and cannot be more than 5% gray.
Nikki has created an informational YouTube video about the Hair for HOPE project, which can be viewed at http://youtu.be/zU66N2E7mSs. Community members and students attending other schools are welcome, and must sign in as a guest at the school’s main office.
Please call TC Central High School at 231-933-3509 for more information.
