TCAPS is proud to announce that Chivas USA, based in Los Angeles, California, recently drafted Casey Townsend, a TC West Senior High School alumnus, fifth in the Major League Soccer Draft.
Casey was a four-year varsity letter winner for Traverse City West, leading the TC West Senior High School Titans to a Division 1 State Title in 2006, and he is the only two-time winner of Michigan’s Mr. Soccer Award, given to the State’s top player in all Divisions. He was coached by Jason Carmien. He played club soccer locally for Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer and Coach Eric Grost before moving on to Vardar Soccer Academy in the Metro-Detroit area. Casey was also a part of the Olympic Development Program and competed on the Under-17 Youth National team. Accepting a full scholarship from Maryland University, he would garner All-ACC freshman honors as well as College Soccer News Freshmen of the Year in 2008. The Terrapins were crowned ACC & National Champions with Casey starting every game in his first season. Casey would finish his career at Maryland with forty-three goals, 3rd on the all-time list at the ACC power. He also earned 1st team All-ACC & 2nd Team All American awards during his senior season. He was chosen 5th overall in the 2012 MLS draft by Chivas USA, and will now be based out of Los Angeles, playing at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Casey is the son of Carl and Terri Townsend of Traverse City, and brother to Hannah, a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School.
